A member of the faculty at the Boston College Carroll School of Management since 1968 and chair of the Business Law Department for over a decade, Professor David P. Twomey has received numerous teaching and service awards at Boston College. He has written 32 editions of his textbooks and numerous articles on labor, employment and business law topics. As Business Law Chair, he serves as a spokesperson for a strong legal and ethical component in both the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. He also has a special interest in curriculum development--serving four terms as chairman of his school's Education Policy Committee. Professor Twomey is also a nationally known labor arbitrator. In the context of impending nationwide railroad and airline strikes, his service includes appointments by Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, William J. Clinton, and George W. Bush to eight Presidential Emergency Boards, whose recommendations served as the basis for the resolution of these labor disputes. Professor Twomey is a member of the National Academy of Arbitrators. He is also a member of the Massachusetts, Florida, and federal Bars.

It is very plain for a text book, it lacks photos, graphics, etc. which I find to be a refreshing change. This book has substance rather than graphics. It is written in a way that make the info easy to read and understand and cites specific case law with case info.

I had to have this book for a college course but it has been very helpful in my job as well. Once the class was over, I carried the book to work and it is sitting in my bookcase so I can refer to it as needed. It has lawsuits to refer to and very valuable information for anyone in the Human Resources field.

Labor and Employment Law by David Twomey was very interesting due to the many cases it provided for the class that I was taking for my graduate degree in Legal Issues in Human Resources Management.

Book was in good condition and was exactly what I needed for class.

Ms Maloney has provided an excellent translation of Fr. Lofink's excellent sequel to his "Jesus of Nazareth" by illustrating how Jesus's Gospel message can be applied today. Thus, he illustrates how miracles, his message of love and the reign of God are still relevant. He also expands his discussions to include insights into the theology of St. Paul, and how effects of the ancient world impacted the message of Christ-lovers. He also discusses the nature of divine revelation, and how the Judeo-Christian tradition differs from other religions, and how these differences may impact of modern thinking. No Irrelevant Jesus provided valuable insight into how Christianity most appropriately fits with the modern world.

After reading Jesus of Nazareth I was primed for more and more. I haven't finished the book yet but have found it magnificently informative. If Christians are meant to follow Christ's teachings, they need to understand what they are. As a catholic christian I am able to say that this is not a feel-good kind of church and it shouldn't be. I love the way Lohfink is able to explain the church from its infancy but also cogniscient of our need to look at life now and be open to changes in practice while staying in line with the mission we have been given.

Great book. Lohfink pushes back against the idea that Jesus is not relevant in the modern world. Chapter 1 is entitled "On Not Taming Jesus". In this chapter and elsewhere Lohfink says that Jesus cannot be reduced to a mere social worker. He can't be trimmed to meet ideological agendas but must be accepted in the Fullness of His Divinity with all His demands for us. His demands free us and open up to us the possibility of joy. God's Mercy is Unfathomable and no human being should despair of it as long as he or she lives. But I find statements like the following in the book refreshing:"Jesus is tamed and made irrelevant in a terrible way ... when his preaching of judgment, which makes up a significant portion of the gospel tradition, is ignored and there is talk only of the loving and tender Jesus. ... Jesus is tamed when it becomes taboo to speak of his celibacy. It was not accidental and not a matter of fate; it is connected with his absolute devotion to the people of God. ... Jesus is also tamed when we sharply criticize the treatment of divorced and remarried persons by Rome and yet keep silent about the altogether clear and thoroughly well-attested words of Jesus against divorce. Can we no longer see that here the Catholic Church is trying to remain true to Jesus, despite all the difficulties it causes for the church? The solution of this difficult and complex question, on which many points of view must be considered, can at any rate not be achieved by putting aside or whitewashing Jesus' demand (pp. 17,18)."Lest Lohfink be reduced to only a conservative, he also speaks for social justice throughout the book. It's time for Catholics to stop dividing themselves ideologically into conservatives, moderates, or liberals, and become Fully CATHOLIC, which does not fit 100% into any ideological/political agenda.

What to make of Lohfink?He can be tedious, long-winded and boring. Some pages made my eyes glaze over. Maybe it's a translation issue.And yet ...when he gets going he has so much to teach me. If you can sit through the uninspired sections you should be rewarded with some refreshing, even unique theological insights.I will, with some trepidation, no doubt read his next book also.

Once again Lofhink has come thru with a solid meaty book on Jesus. This book brings some real challenges to all believers of every Christian denomination. What is Jesus really trying to say to us today? Lohfinlk spells it out clearly and challenges every one of us to understand that to follow Jesus is no easy thing.

Scholaryly but put in language for the person in the pew!

The first 1/3 of the book is good. If you are not of the Roman Catholic persuasion this part of the book contains only bits and pieces that are specifically oriented to the RC tradition. The other 2/3 of the book has some good material, but is much more oriented to the RC tradition. This shouldn't be too surprising as the author is a priest.

About the Author

Brian K. Vaughan is the Eisner and Harvey Award-Winning co-creator of many critically acclaimed comic books, including Y: THE LAST MAN, EX MACHINA, Runaways and THE PRIDE OF BAGHDAD. A professional comics writer since his days as an undergraduate film student at New York University, Brian has written every major DC and Marvel character from BATMAN to X-MEN. He's also written several screenplays, stage plays, and short stories, but mostly, he likes to work on the funny books. Pia Guerra was born in New Jersey in 1971. Through the 1990s Pia worked on various independent titles including the Bruiser, Sinnamon, Slip, Weird Business, Asylum, and a series of gaming manuals for White Wolf's Masquerade, Changeling and Werewolf lines. In early 2001 Pia began working on Y: The Last Man written by Brian K. Vaughan. Since it's release in July of 2002 response to the book has been overwhelmingly positive. If you've made it this far then you probably already know what the series is about. In case you don't, Yorick Brown becomes the last known man alive when a mysterious plague wipes all other life on earth that have a Y chromosome with the exception of his pet monkey, Ampersand. Together they are mankind's last hope and must survive many horrors and obstacles to hopefully find a cure and bring mankind back from extinction while also reuniting Yorick with girlfriend Beth in Australia.When I first heard of this series I was very intrigued by the concept and knew I wanted to read it. Thankfully they had it at my local library and I picked up volume one only to find I could not put it down. This series in amazing as I'm sure many other reviewers are already telling you. The characters are likable and feel like real people despite the extraordinary circumstances around them. They include of course many strong female characters such as a secret agent assigned to protect Yorick, a biologist trying to bring mankind back who may know more about the incident then she's let on, an Israeli officer that will stop at nothing to find the last man on Earth whose motive and goal is unclear, and many more. The dialogue is witty and the storyline is addictive. Nearly every chapter ends with a revelation of some kind that shakes your perception of the world within the comic without relying on cheap tricks to keep the reader engaged. I don't want to spoil anything for people that haven't read it before but I will say that if you haven't given this series a chance yet and it isn't at your local library then here is the best place to start. I seriously doubt you'll regret it.

I was assigned Volume 1 to read for a Science Fiction class at my college, and I originally found a very short except of it online, and immediately I knew I was in love.This was really my first graphic novel that I was fully immersed in, loved reading so much in just a few short pages, I knew I was going to shell out the Big Bucks for the Deluxe versions (even though the prices are roughly the same). The Deluxe editions look fantastic on my bookshelf, and have such a great reread value.The Deluxe edition includes all the cover art of each issue printed within it, in vibrant colors and a great ratio in accordance to the page. The end of it also includes some preliminary sketches for the characters and some of the props.Should you purchase this and continue on to Y: The Last Man, Book 2, Deluxe Edition, you'll find that the Deluxe Editions come with something a little different after this, and each one is still a delicious little surprise for you to soak in after the completion of the volumes within.It has something for everybody. Not sure where all the positive reviews for this series are coming from. Volume 1 does not stand by itself or interest me in a way to continue. I'm assuming there is a twist later, but the way all the men die doesn't make any sense. Every decision that every character makes especially the protagonist are beyond stupid. There is not one believable or interesting character or situation. The artwork is mediocre at best. I would avoid this serious like the plague that targets the Y chromosome unless you are specifically on a mission to read every graphic novel ever made.

First off, I'll start with the actual book itself. I checked out the other options, and I must say that the Deluxe Edition Books are the must buy, as currently the first book is actually cheaper than buying the first two normal volumes. What you get here is of amazing quality, with it being hardcover, and I think slightly over-sized from the comic, which helps make the amazing art really shine. For the story, the main idea isn't too original, where every man dies, but the resulting conflicts are completely original, to a point where I was almost amazed someone had the creativity to make something like Y: The Last Man. No one knows what killed off every single mammal with a Y chromosome, but whatever it was for some reason it left one comical escape artist stuck in a rut and his male monkey alive in a world of confused and pissed off women. The group of main characters is completed with a genetic scientist that almost created a successful clone of herself right at the time of the apocalyptic event, and a secret agent, ordered by the new female president to protect the last man on earth. The group goes on a cross country trek to try to figure out a way to save humanity, while facing life threatening road blocks every step of the way. My only problem with this graphic novel, is that some of the reasoning of the villains is kind of goofy and forced, mainly the insane Amazons. They do at times give a reason for why they are the way they are, but at the same time it all boiled down to, oh they're just crazy, instead of giving them an actual purpose or reason for their horrible actions. Still, I'd highly recommend this Deluxe Edition Book, and I'd say that everyone should have Y: The Last Man on their shelves.

Just returned from a trip to Seoul, used this book as my bible. It came recommended to me by a friend as the "freshest" and most up-to-date guide to the city, and I can't disagree. Very helpful in navigating the city. Directions were clear and concise. Maps were very helpful.One note -- some subway stop exits have been re-numbered since publication of this book, so when it says "take exit # ___", occasionally it was off. Especially in Gangnam.

I find Time Out guides to be the least touristy, most interesting, and most complete guides available; with the exceptions of theirhotel reviews. That being said, I was left feeling the guide to Seoul didn't do the trick for this increasingly interesting and important city. I didn't get a sense of the scheme of the city, or the places the other guides don;t even mention. I was left with trying to figure of the other guides to order, or that maybe Seoul wasn't long flight.

This book was published in conjunction with an exhibition co-organized by the Cleveland Museum of Art and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum (the latter in New York). As such, it follows the format of many such books, consisting of items from the exhibition, other items and photos deemed relevant to the story, and text by experts explaining various topics of the exhibition.Where this example stands above some similar books is the overall quality of the result. The photography is outstanding, the organization is solid, and the expert commentary is more engaging than in some books, where it can be rather dry.While the books claims to use "jazz as its unifying metaphor", and while it does invoke the music of the time as part of the context of the art, I didn't find it as central to the story as the authors intended. But it did add a nice flavor to the book, so no objection on my part.I'm fond of these sorts of books, and love Art Deco, so I'm a natural audience for this book. If either of the preceding doesn't apply to you you may not like the book as much as I did.The publisher provided me a copy for review, but I have purchased a copy for my library.

The book is a feast for the eyes and accompanies the ground-breaking exhibition of the same name held at the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York and the Cleveland Museum. Sarah Coffin and Stephen Harrison have written interesting essays to accompany the gorgeous photographs and have laid down an intellectual and artistic structure for viewing the decorative arts of the period. An interesting period as America took European developments and brewed up its own styleA great gift and fun to enjoy.Note: Sarah Coffin and Stephen Harrison are the authors and it comes without a dustcover (a little surprising). On the other hand it's a very tactile cover that invites you to touch and open, which I find rather clever.

The Jazz Age - American Style in the 1920s has all I would expect/hope for in a book on this subject: a complete treatment of museum objects and the people or events that influenced their design. Copious amounts of high quality photographed objects accompany the relevant paragraphs in the text. The authors give us a thorough and well-researched tour of the era through the objects in their museums: from bracelets to tiaras, cigarette cases to room treatments, objet d'art, fashion, rugs, furniture, and even images from leading magazines of the time. It's a window onto the America that, thorough the World War, suddenly had the world at its fingertips. And as the title suggests, it is much more than just art deco.The book breaks down by influence rather than subject/type of object. Starting with an introduction about the influence of Paris and exotic locales/history, the book transitions into a discussion on how styles changed during the period. From there, the rise of the American woman, the machine age, influences of immigrants, music and historical references, the rise of the department store, emergence of America as a textile design hub, and more are discussed. The authors are quite thorough but never bland - and the discussions begin and end with the objects themselves. E.g., an ancient Egyptian influence makeup case belonging to the Dodge family or items belonging to the iconic Josephine Baker and why she would have chosen them personally provide perspective on a design element.The images come in all sizes and are closely placed to where they are discussed. The order and presentation makes quite sense and the authors give us a wonderful glimpse into life during that period. Granted, all the objects are museum pieces or from high end fashion magazines like Vogue. They represent the pinnacle of design of the time - and therefore only the very wealthy could have afforded them. But every object (and there are many) is stunning in its own unique way. I learned quite a bit from this book despite having a good foundation knowledge of the period.I highly recommend this book for those interested in design, history, or America of the 1920s. It's beautifully presented and very fascinating. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

I love the Jazz era, I love the music, the art, the clothing, the jewellery, the furniture and the interiors - the whole style of the era is just so beautiful. This book has many beautiful examples of the period, beautiful photos and interesting information that accompany most of the examples. I can't say enough about the show and the book, despite not being a deco or jazz age fanatic. The book highlights the unique style of the 20's. I was particularly struck by the work and story of the firm that produced the image for the cover- Rose Iron Works of Cleveland. After attending a lecture by Harrison and Coffin at the Cooper Hewitt I became even more intrigued... this firm (Rose Iron Works) is still in existence, it's still run by the same family, and still producing amazing works of art in a non-descript shop/studio in Cleveland, Ohio. It's one of those amazing all-American stories that has been somehow gone virtually unnoticed. Regardless, the book is chalk full of wonderful photographs and images from this infinitely interesting period of time. I highly recommend this book!!!

Nearly 50 years after the Apollo moon landings, after all the books written about it, you might imagine that nothing new could be said about it. But astronomy historians Kevin Schindler and William Sheehan have given us a fascinating look at a mostly unknown chapter of the story. The astronauts did some of their most important geology training in the varied and famous landscapes of northern Arizona, at Meteor Crater, at the Grand Canyon, at Sunset Crater National Monument, at an artificial moonscape blasted out of a lava field, and at Lowell Observatory. At first the astronauts were bored with learning geology, until their tutors decided to take them for a two-day hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, which got them hooked on geology. Schindler and Sheehan have dug up some very rare (indeed, unknown) photos that show the astronauts figuring out everything they would need to know on the moon.This book is a must for any Apollo history enthusiast.
