He has pastored multiple churches in a wide variety of contexts and has a doctor of ministry degree from Missio Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Which is more important, evangelism or justice? For many Christians, how we answer this question informs not only our ministry priorities but also our perceived faithfulness to the gospel itself. Problems arise when we don't answer the question with the right balance, or at least the right balance as assumed by the person asking the evangelism-justice question. But what if the problem isn't with how we answer but in the question itself? As Adam writes, "Instead of compartmentalizing justice as outreach or evangelism, we need a fuller and more nuanced understanding of mission that sees God’s intent as larger (though surely not less) than the salvation of souls."This is this significant contribution of Becoming a Just Church. By framing justice as an attribute of the church, Adam invites the reader away from the either-or of justice and evangelism that has bifurcated these conversations for way too long. Because churches of all theological persuasions have accepted this bifurcation, Adam has to address the readers' assumptions about what it means to be the church. Adam clearly articulates the purpose and practice of justice in the local church context. In this book we can see God’s plan for God’s people to bear witness to the whole gospel of Jesus Christ that moves beyond an outreach strategy. God’s plan for Shalom is a the way of life for local churches in communities and neighborhoods. As our American Church culture continues to struggle with new strategies to reach the lost in a post modern world, Adam shows us God’s original plan for God’s people that has always been at the center of God’s heart. Shalom! Abundant flourishing for all of creation together! This is good news!

Adam Gustine writes this in Becoming a Just Church: "...would someone who only lived in your sanctuary know thatthere is a real world outside of it and that that world is wracked with injustice?" In my personal experience of church for much of my life, the answer to this question would be no. And I think many people with an evangelical church background would say the same. We wonder then why people who live life in the margins feel out of place in our churches.He goes on to say "If we were to consider the normative experience in many evangelical churches, it would appear that the real world outside the walls of the church was not considered. Ignoring the world outside, particularly the moments of extreme brokenness and injustice, is a subtle way of being a high-ground church. Because high-ground society is largely insulated from the injustice of the world, there is a certain degree of freedom not to talk about issues that arise in our world. For people who experience life as vulnerable or marginalized people, walking into a gathering for corporate worship and not talking about the issues they experience day to day often seems offensive."So good. So needed. Highly reccomended!

Directed primarily at North American white evangelicals, Becoming a Just Church explores the question, What would it look like for the church to embody God’s justice in the world? For many evangelicals the topic itself will be anathema, but for a growing subset of evangelicals, God’s call to pursue justice is of paramount concern, and as Gustine insists, a central theme of Scripture. As such, he makes the case that justice cannot be confined to one program area of the church, but must become a way of life for God's people. Walking us through the biblical storyline, Gustine draws out a theology of justice rooted in the ultimate picture of God’s kingdom of Shalom. This section alone is worth the price the book.One of the other great gifts of Becoming a Just Church is the vocabulary and imagery Gustine invokes to offer readers a framework for imagining and living into God’s justice. He also does us the favor throughout of providing honest and critical reflection on his own pastoral experiences, which I suspect will resonate deeply for pastors who find themselves on a similar journey. The discussion questions after each chapter are thoughtful, provocative and useful for guiding discussion in small group settings. Our church will definitely benefit from having this as a resource and guide!

This is an excellent book! I really appreciate that this is not merely a treatise for justice in the church, or strictly theological (though there is plenty of strong theological work here), but the author begins at becoming the kind of people who embody the justice of God. He also provides several great thoughts and questions for further consideration and practical steps toward application in our own context at the end of each chapter. An incredibly helpful tool for further processing and discerning next steps, both personally and as leadership teams.Such a welcome contribution to a very pertinent issue. As Gustine writes, “Injustice is tangible evidence of the kingdom of darkness at work in the world.“ But in this book Gustine vividly paints the picture of how God works through us as the church to bear the light of his kingdom into that darkness as a parable, a demonstration of the shalom of God. As we become just as a people, the light of God breaks into the brokenness of this world, and that is when truly transformative things happen.

Very disappointed as the title implies assistance with communicating with Alzheimer's patients. My wife has AD and I am always looking for guides or assistance to help ease some of her confusion. Once into the book, I found that the Validation technique is for dealing with what the author refers to as "old-old" patients (80+). And in these cases, the technique is "..... for older adults with Alzheimer’s-type dementia who are struggling to resolve unfinished business before they die." The author further points out that "People who fulfill their life tasks at each stage achieve integrity in late life.......These people do not need Validation." Hello....what am I doing with this book? Maybe I didn't read the reviews clearly enough.My wife has had a fulfilling and comfortable life....what would I be trying to help her validate? This may be a great technique for the professional with difficult patients in a care setting, but I found no value helping me. I finally gave up as the volume of examples were not what I could relate to either by event or by age.... My wife is not "old-old" and is not trying to resolve some past issue (at least not that I'm aware of ......been married 50 years). I simply want to help her when she gets overwhelmed with confusion.I would be reluctant to recommend this book to the average caregiver of an Alzheimer's patient.....at least a spouse.

Good, good book on caregiving for elders with dementia. Am using the techniques outlined in this book with my husband. Validating him regularly, he has begun to trust me again. When I was using reality-based techniques, we were becoming enemies. It's still difficult living with someone with dementia, but so much better than it was before I read this book. I highly recommend it.

This new version is excellent. The case studies that Naomi and other Validation workers tell really make you understand how validation can help.I read this version while taking the Validation Teachers course. I found together with the case studies it really helped put all the principles and techniques of Validation together.

Without this book, I would not know how to react appropriately when faced with the sudden effusions of disorientation in time and place that disrupt conversations with my 92-year-old mother. This is a particularly useful combination of theory supplemented by many specific examples that illustrate how to respond. The ideas about the importance of validation for human beings also have a way of spilling over into your own life. Don't put off getting this book if you're dealing with this kind of problem.

My Mom has Alzheimer's and this book has helped me a lot. Being a Medical person I thought I knew all about this disease, well I was wrong. This book has so much good helpful info that I read the book in 4 days and now I am re-reading with underlining parts.

My mom is 80 years old and suffers from Alzheimer's related dementia. Everyday we go through her thinking someone has kidnapped 2 of her children. She trikes to go looking for them and gets angry when we won't let her go outside and look four them. This book helped me know how to validate hear fears and comfort her. She lost two children to death while she was at work. I am so thankful that now I know how to comfort her and get her through these terrifying times.

This is the best book dealing with dementia I've ever read. I highly recommend it to anyone working with dementia patients or family members of dementia patients. Practicing the principles in this book are revolutionary and I wish this book was mandatory reading for everyone in the medical profession from caregiver to physician.

Excellent ideas for communicating more effectively with dementia patients--how to cut down the stress for the patient and the caregiver.

About the Author

Michael Gruenbaum was born in 1930 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. In 1942, he was sent to the concentration camp Theresienstadt, or Terezin, with his mother and sister, and remained there until the end of the war. He emigrated to the United States in 1950, graduated from MIT and Yale, served two years in the Army, and worked for the Boston Redevelopment Authority and Mass. Dept. of Public Works, before cofounding a consulting firm. He was married for fifty years to the late Thelma Gruenbaum, author with Michael of Nesarim: Child Survivors of Terezin. He has three sons and four grandchildren.Todd Hasak-Lowy has published several books for adults. 33 Minutes was his first book for young readers and he made his YA debut with Me Being Me Is Exactly as Insane as You Being You. He lives with his wife and two daughters in Evanston, Illinois.

I work in the office of Massachusetts Senator Cynthia Stone Creem. Michael Gruenbaum lives in her district and was introduced to the Senate in January, 2016 when the Senate adjourned in memory of the January 27 liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. After Senator Creem and some staff members read "Somewhere There Is Still a Sun", I agreed to submit the review below, which reflects many of our thoughts and impressions of his book.Michael Gruenbaum’s story is moving, and effective. It is also unusual and riveting, because it describes the impact of the Holocaust on Michael as a young child and then an adolescent, seen through his eyes at each stage of the onslaught. We learn what a 9-year old child thought when German troops first marched in formation through Prague in 1939, and when he and his family were harassed, then dispossessed, then transported to Terezin. Michael also describes the arrest and disappearance of his father. We want to warn him that each experience he describes was more sinister than he thought at the time, but he was only a child, and he eventually had to come to the realization of what was happening on his own. That emerges masterfully. Simultaneously we learn of the resourcefulness of his mother, which enabled her, Michael, and Michael’s sister, and him to emerge after the war. All of this experience is told without bitterness, but from the vantage of one who in adulthood appreciates what his family and Jews endured. Gruenbaum’s book was written with Tod Hasak-Lowy, who includes a brief but fascinating description of the process which he and Gruenbaum went through in order to maximize the accuracy of thoughts and perceptions from the 1930’s and ‘40’s.This is, indeed, a book we all will remember.

Once I started reading the book, I really couldn’t put it down. Except for the beginning, I essentially read it all in one sitting.People might wonder why we need yet another book in a field that has already been exhaustively researched and recorded from most every angle, but I think this story is truly unique and adds a fresh perspective. You see and experience everything through the eyes of a pre-teen. The use of the present tense really makes everything come to life. There is no hindsight, so it leads you step by step from a fairly pleasant, regular life in Prague down into a situation that goes from bad to terrible to worse. In this way, you start to vaguely grasp how this horror of horrors really can happen. And it did.The matter-of-fact storytelling, with its solid, realistic detailing, engages all five senses in a way that really fleshes out the physical and mental anguish of being thrown helpless into this condition. Without giving away anything, I can say there are certainly a few searing scenes from this book I will never forget. There are also cliffhangers along the way that ratchet up the suspense notch by notch as the story builds toward what appears to be an inevitable and final doom. And it's all true.This book is already a classic in my eyes -- a story well told, demonstrating how the values of teamwork, friendship, resourcefulness, and family love can prevail. I have never lived through anything at all like this, and I thank the author for sharing his experience in a way that has helped me gain a sliver of a grasp at understanding, in a more tangible and emotional way, what really did happen -- and can happen again if we’re not careful. I will be processing what I have just read for years to come.

I was so moved by this book that I think it should be required reading in middle and high schools. This is a story about real sacrifice, suffering and the horrors of the Holocaust. Yet, even while living in a concentration camp, there was still love, friendship and integrity.It is tremendously poignant because Mr. Gruenbaum was just 10 years old when his life changed. He had a warm and loving family home with his parents and sister. Then his father is taken, and they are moved until they end up in a concentration camp. Reading from his perspective and with the help of Mr. Hasak-Lowy, the story flows beautifully in its simplicity and eloquence. I was moved to tears on a NYC train platform reading the passage about his father’s funeral! The pain was palpable but not maudlin.Yet, even with all of the horrors around him, this young boy managed to keep grounded. He and his friends helped one another and others as soon as they got the chance.I’ve already passed this book on to my daughters, and will continue to share it because it is completely worth reading.

I am certain that the actual survivor - Michael “Misha” Gruenbaum - suffered incredibly from his Holocaust experiences, including the loss of his family and friends, and his experiences in Terezin (Theresienstadt). The actual author of this book - a professional writer named Todd Hasak-Lowy - took an interesting approach in presenting the material as a young boy's present tense first person account, and apparently designed the book for young children. As a result, while we do see glimpses of Holocaust deaths, we are really just in the largely naive and innocent mind's eye of a young boy mainly enjoying the fun of soccer games in the Nazi's propaganda camp which they used as a showplace for Red Cross visitors. This book risks fulfilling the Nazi's showplace propaganda goals of Terizin, especially if the children who read this book mainly remember the soccer games and don't read other Holocaust books to learn the full extent of the Holocaust horrors.

The author is a very clear writer and makes these short biographies very entertaining and interesting to read. The stories are engaging and offer insight into human nature. A very useful mirror for our own behaviors sometimes.

This book is filled with windows into the the lives of people who did or tried to do very interesting things, and never had their stories told until now. Very interesting slices of life. Fun to read.

This is a great book. A current trend in popular history is to write histories of great people who achieved success but who are not household names (consider the book "Longitude"); Paul Collins turns this idea on its head by writing the stories of 13 people whose ideas, frankly, did not have a lot of merit, but who were famous in their day.The title story, Banvard's Folly, tells the tale of the artist John Banvard -- world famous in the 1850s, but utterly forgotten today, whose great moving panorama of the Mississippi River made him rich, but who ultimately was destroyed competing with P.T. Barnum.Other stories include "The Man With N-Ray Eyes", which relates how a French scientist believes erroneously that he has found a new source of radiation; "A.J. Pleasonton's Blue Light Special", which discusses the 1870s fad concerning the healing properties of light reflected through blue glass, and numerous others, including the story of a Shakepeare forger, a woman's quest to prove Shakespeare's works were written by Francis Bacon and others, and the development of the pneumatic train.The book is a little sad, because each of the characters really believes in their ideas, even though they are rejected by society. But instead of a happy ending, these stories all end badly for the protagonists -- they end up mocked and forgotten.The book is remarkable for its scholarship -- researching the forgotten intellectual and cultural history of a previous century is no easy task; but Mr. Collins brings the reader back into the culture of the times easily. The stories are entertaining and very amusing.

"Banvard's Folly" is a wonderful book, thanks to the talents of author Paul Collins. As you have probably gathered by now from other write-ups, this book tells the story of 13 people, once prominent, and now largely forgotten. They each earned inclusion in this book because of a grand failure of some sort. In other hands, this material could have been a tool for ridicule; but Collins strikes just the right tone here. While not forgiving his subjects' excesses or blind spots, he manages to tell their stories with a real sense of empathy. It's obvious that a lot of research went into this volume, but Collins never overpowers the reader with it; each chapter just seems to glide along. If history's lesser lights are of interest to you, you should enjoy this.

So maybe I have a bit of a crush on Paul Collins and everything he writes, but truly Banvard's Folly is quite clever. Its been a few years since I first read Banvard's Folly, but I was able to dig up my initial thoughts thanks to shelfari.Paul Collins is a genius and I love him. If I have children, they will learn history from this book (as I will home school)... these people will all be included in their lessons from when we're studying Nathaniel Hawthorne and Emily Dickinson to Thoreau and the Concord Grape. John Banvard will be discussed when learning about art and art history as well as financial wisdom. We will discuss Delia Bacon in relation to the people she corresponded with as well as when we study Shakespeare... along with her, Coates' adventures as Romeo will be a humorous anecdote to read between plays and the discussion of various acting techniques. This was a fantastic piece of history that I find amazing the world has forgotten. Let's bring these stories back for the future generations! Thank you Paul Collins for bringing them all back to life in the pages of your book.Now, I do have a child, and true to my word I have written this book into the curriculum I have been creating for her since I discovered I was pregnant. All of the 13 people depicted in this book were eventually mocked and forgotten. Even though their ideas were rejected, they really believed in themselves and their work. The author did vast amounts of research on these formerly famous people. He left no stone unturned to accurately describe them. What a clever subject for a book! My hats off to Mr. Collins.
