Amazon.com Review

A brain scientist's journey from a debilitating stroke to full recovery becomes an inspiring exploration of human consciousness and its possibilities On the morning of December 10, 1996, Jill Bolte Taylor, a thirty-seven-year-old Harvard-trained brain scientist, experienced a massive stroke when a blood vessel exploded in the left side of her brain. A neuroanatomist by profession, she observed her own mind completely deteriorate to the point that she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life, all within the space of four brief hours. As the damaged left side of her brain--the rational, grounded, detail- and time-oriented side--swung in and out of function, Taylor alternated between two distinct and opposite realties: the euphoric nirvana of the intuitive and kinesthetic right brain, in which she felt a sense of complete well-being and peace; and the logical, sequential left brain, which recognized Jill was having a stroke, and enabled her to seek help before she was lost completely. In My Stroke of Insight, Taylor shares her unique perspective on the brain and its capacity for recovery, and the sense of omniscient understanding she gained from this unusual and inspiring voyage out of the abyss of a wounded brain. It would take eight years for Taylor to heal completely. Because of her knowledge of how the brain works, her respect for the cells composing her human form, and most of all an amazing mother, Taylor completely repaired her mind and recalibrated her understanding of the world according to the insights gained from her right brain that morning of December 10th. Today Taylor is convinced that the stroke was the best thing that could have happened to her. It has taught her that the feeling of nirvana is never more than a mere thought away. By stepping to the right of our left brains, we can all uncover the feelings of well-being and peace that are so often sidelined by our own brain chatter. A fascinating journey into the mechanics of the human mind, My Stroke of Insight is both a valuable recovery guide for anyone touched by a brain injury, and an emotionally stirring testimony that deep internal peace truly is accessible to anyone, at any time. Questions for Jill Bolte Taylor Amazon.com: Your first reaction when you realized what was happening to your body was one you would expect: "Oh my gosh, I'm having a stroke!" Your second, though, was a little more surprising: "Wow, this is so cool!" What could be cool about a stroke? Taylor: I grew up to study the brain because I have a brother who is only 18 months older than I am. He was very different in the way he perceived experiences and then chose to behave. As a result, I became fascinated with the human brain and how it creates our perception of reality. He was eventually diagnosed with the brain disorder schizophrenia, and I dedicated my career to the postmortem investigation of the human brain in an attempt to understand, at a biological level, what are the differences between my brain and my brotherÂ’s brain. On the morning of the stroke, I realized that my brain was no longer functioning like a "normal" brain and this insight into my brother's reality excited me. I was fascinated to intimately understand what it might be like on the inside for someone who would not be diagnosed as normal. Through the eyes of a curious scientist, this was an absolutely rare and fascinating experience for me to witness the breakdown of my own mind. Amazon.com: What did you learn about the brain from your stroke and your recovery that your scientific training hadn't prepared you for? Taylor: My scientific training did not teach me anything about the human spirit and the value of compassion. I had been trained as a scientist, not as a clinician. I can only hope that we are teaching our future physicians about compassion in medicine, and I know that some medical schools, including the Indiana University School of Medicine, have created a curriculum with this intention. My training as a scientist, however, did provide me with a roadmap to how the body and brain work. And although I lost my left cognitive mind that thinks in language, I retained my right hemisphere that thinks in pictures. As a result, although I could not communicate with the external world, I had an intuitive understanding about what I needed to do in order to create an environment in which the cells in my brain could be happy and healthy enough that they could regain their function. In addition, because of my training, I had an innate trust in the ability of my brain to be able to recover itself and my mother and I respected the organ by listening to it. For example, when I was tired, I allowed my brain to sleep, and when I was fresh and capable of focusing my attention, we gave me age-appropriate toys and tools with which to work. Amazon.com: Your stroke affected functions in your left brain, leaving you to what you call the "la-la land" of your right hemisphere. What was it like to live in your right brain, and then to rebuild your left? Taylor: When the cells in my left brain became nonfunctional because they were swimming in a pool of blood, they lost their ability to inhibit the cells in my right hemisphere. In my right brain, I shifted into the consciousness of the present moment. I was in the right here, right now awareness, with no memories of my past and no perception of the future. The beauty of La-la land (my right hemisphere experience of the present moment) was that everything was an explosion of magnificent stimulation and I dwelled in a space of euphoria. This is great way to exist if you don't have to communicate with the external world or care whether or not you have the capacity to learn. I found that in order for me to be able to learn anything, however, I had to take information from the last moment and apply it to the present moment. When my left hemisphere was completely nonfunctional early on, it was impossible for me to learn, which was okay with me, but I am sure it was frustrating for those around me. A simple example of this was trying to put on my shoes and socks. I eventually became physically capable of putting my shoes and socks on, but I had no ability to understand why I would have to put my socks on before my shoes. To me they were simply independent actions that were not related and I did not have the cognitive ability to figure out the appropriate sequencing of the events. Over time, I regained the ability to weave moments back together to create an expanse of time, and with this ability came the ability to learn methodically again. Life in La-la land will always be just a thought away, but I am truly grateful for the ability to think with linearity once again. Amazon.com: What can we learn about our brains and ourselves from your experience, even if we haven't lived through the kind of brain trauma you have? Taylor: I learned that I have much more say about what goes on between my ears than I was ever taught and I believe that this is true for all of us. I used to understand that I had the ability to stop thinking about one thing by consciously choosing to preoccupy my mind with thinking about something else. But I had no idea that it only took 90 seconds for me to have an emotional circuit triggered, flush a physiological response through my body and then flush completely out of me. We can all learn that we can take full responsibility for what thoughts we are thinking and what emotional circuitry we are feeling. Knowing this and acting on this can lead us into feeling a wonderful sense of well-being and peacefulness. Amazon.com: You are the "Singin' Scientist" for Harvard's Brain Bank (just as you were before your stroke). Could you tell us about the Brain Bank (in song or not)? Taylor: There is a long-term shortage of brain tissue donated for research into the severe mental illnesses. Most people donÂ’t realize that when you sign the back of your license as an organ donor, the brain is not included. If you would like to donate your brain for research, you must contact a brain bank directly. There is also a shortage of "normal control" tissue for research. The bottom line reality is that if there were more tissue available for research, then more scientists would be dedicating their careers to the study of the severe mental illnesses and we would have more answers about what is going on with these disorders. The numbers of mentally ill individuals in our society are staggering. The most serious and disabling conditions affect about 6 percent--or one in 17--adults and 9-13 percent of children in the United States. Half of all lifetime conditions of mental illness start by age 14 years, and three-fourths by age 24 years. For more information about brain donation to the Harvard brain bank, please call 1-800-BRAINBANK or visit them at: www.brainbank.mclean.org If you would like to hear me sing the brain bank jingle, please visit www.drjilltaylor.com!

I heard of My Stroke of Insight by Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor after attending a stroke support group meeting as an assignment while I was a student in a Physical Therapist Assistant program. My father also had a stroke in 2008 so I was interested in reading about a medical professional’s account of what was happening to their body as they themselves were experiencing a stroke. This book was much more than I was expecting. As a medical professional myself now I wasn’t sure if Dr. Bolte Taylor would sound very clinical and dive into lecturing, but it was quite the opposite. Dr. Bolte Taylor did explain some neuro anatomy and structures affected during her stroke but she expressed her thoughts in such detail they were so powerful, human and gripping. As I read, I was so moved by her courage and determination to push through and focus on her recovery. I loved how she reflected on relearning everything and appreciated her right hemisphere where creativity lies waiting to be explored and how she embraced her artistic side after her stroke. This is a fantastic book I highly recommend for anyone even if you don’t have a relative who’s had a stroke or even if you don’t work in the medical field Dr. Bolte Taylor explains her story in a way that’s so moving any reader will walk away from it with compassion and so many lessons.

What do you get when you have a brain scientist, with a Ph. D., experience a stroke, survive, and then fully recover? You get a pretty amazing book detailing the experience and recounting a remarkable journey back to recovery. On December 10, 1996, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, a 37-year-old Harvard-trained brain scientist, suffered a major brain hemorrhage of the left side of her brain. As a result of her training, she had the knowledge, insight, and wherewithal to understand what was taking place and remarkably was able to seek help while her brain and body were failing her.The book begins with a couple of chapters of her background prior to the stroke and then progresses to the day of the stroke. Her recounting of the day of the stroke is filled with incredible detail, especially considering the mental deterioration she was experiencing. We learn how she was able to survive and her incredible journey back where she needed to relearn everything, even the simplest of things like feeding herself, walking, reading, writing, and so many things we take for granted.Dr. Jill says it took her 8 years to fully recover from her stroke. She's put together an incredible book of her journey and she's been a guest on a number of different shows. She even has an 18-minute TedTalk on her idea worth spreading.1,683 Amazon reviewers have given this an average of 4.6 stars. Goodreads shows a 3.86 rating after 18,345 ratings and 2,887 reviews. I absolutely love the study of our brain's neuroplasticity. This first half of this book was amazing but it slowed a little in the second half. I give it a 5-star for the first half and 3-star for the second for a total 4-star rating.

MY STROKE OF INSIGHT REVIEWWe are fortunate that Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, author of “My Stroke of Insight,” is a brain scientist with enough fortitude to survive a stroke, intellect to examine the experience, patience to overlook medical ignorance, and a willingness to share her adversity. It is also a delight to have a communicator with writing skills and the ability to dumb down her discussion to my level, a step above a cement mixer. One passage in her book asks the us, the readers, to imagine having our natural facilities, speech, vision, hearing, movement, memory, sensation, suddenly stripped away from our consciousness, leaving us with a peaceful heart and afloat in a sea of euphoria. You simply blend into a world of glorious emptiness until blessed sleep quiets the world around you. You awake to the same euphoria until you sleep again. Sounds peaceful if you reject life. One amazing aspect I saw here was Dr. Taylor’s ability to fight through her loss of mental capacity and realize that she would have to keep struggling if she was going make any sense of what was happening. As a clinician, she was determined to keep a mental awareness of the debilitation that was overtaking her. To have retained the impressions and impulses of an empty mind seems to be a remarkable achievement; her dedication seems relentless.I was moved by her exasperation with the medical community and its inability to evolve into a more caring and understanding world than they normally inhabit. The ability to communicate with a person in Dr. Taylor‘s condition seemed alien to their way of providing care. This is a phenomenon that has frustrated many patients, although most are not as badly injured as Dr. Taylor. I suspect that her criticism may have positive effects. The author starts her book with a simple exploration of the brain and its functions. We relive the morning she had her stroke, a relentless narrative of her injury. I actually tried to shy away from her descriptions of senses leaving the body and mind. I was anxious trying to figure out how she was going to get help. Then we arrive at the hospital and a world where help is expected, but seemed a great agitation to Dr. Taylor because of the hustle and bustle that aggravated her injury because of the noise.Eventually Dr. Taylor leaves the hospital in the company of her mother, a remarkable woman with the same fortitude and determination, who, sadly, passed away in December 2015. We agonize through Dr. Taylor’s slow return to partial functionality with Mom as a patient caretaker, experience a complex surgical procedure to her brain, and eventually work our way back to a nearly normal life. It’s a fantastic journey that will have you clenching your fingers and curling your toes as you physically experience the dismaying world of confusion and hopelessness. Learn from it and don’t miss it.Schuyler T WallaceAuthor of TIN LIZARD TALES

I'd read this book a number of years ago and urged our library to purchase it. Living in an area where there are a lot of older people, I felt its wisdom and insight would be most helpful to any who have loved ones with a stroke. This August my own husband suffered a stroke, not nearly as severe as Jill Taylor's but his speech, reading and writing were affected.I just purchased our own copy. I wanted to review the processes of Jill's mother, the caregiver. It was also the first book my husband was able to read. It helped him to understand what was happening. Love and hard work, inspired by Jill and her mother, will get us through.

“Imagine Howard Zinn, the late renegade professor who gave us ‘A People’s History of the United States,’ kidnapping Huell Howser and rewriting your Auto Club TourBook. . . . Interesting book with lots of cool, off the beaten track places. It's kind of a sightseeing guide with a great historical narrative about each place. What is really different from other LA guidebooks is that it picks out the hidden history of less affluent or touristy areas. I go to USC so we're a bit far from a lot of the typical Hollywood stuff, but this book had plenty of fascinating history about South LA, Downtown, and such. After a semester of exploring on the weekends I still haven't been everywhere the guide talks about, but I haven't forgotten the places I have seen.

Very revealing of little-known facts of a well-known city.

Detailed history, good maps, and a social justice bent to it all. See the unspoken conflicts and landmarks throughout LA. Know your rights at the beaches near Malibu. See where people have fought for freedom and equality, not where John Travolta decided to eat a hamburger. My only wish is that they do this kind of guide for every major city in the US.

Very good!^_^

If deserves 5 stars. Buy it. I love it and it's fun to read. Me, I hate LA, but reading this little guide reminds me that there's more than frustration, noise, dirt, and a giant parking lot called Los Angeles.

I bought this book for my son who just moved out to Burbank, CA. He really likes it! It will be really helpful when I go out to visit. :)

How to describe to friends and family in other parts of the U.S. (and world) what makes Los Angeles such a meaningful, wonderful, challenging, joyful place to live, after their minds have been jammed full of images of a "Los Angeles" that is actually some amalgamation of Beverly Hills, Malibu, and West Hollywood? How to make real and visible the past and on-going struggles for justice and liberation that makes LA the heart of so many of today's national and global peoples' movements? Why, A People's Guide to Los Angeles, of course!A People's Guide to Los Angeles serves as an indispensable guidebook for the native Angelen@, the short-term visitor, and the newly-arrived-to-LA alike. Rich with history and images, it is a pleasure to read. Buy a copy for yourself and for a friend-- one who already loves Los Angeles, or does, and just doesn't know it yet.

There are likely few cities that have been more examined or described in the pages of the tour guide genre than Los Angeles. A simple Amazon search gives you over 1,400 travel books on Los Angeles, many of which are excellent companions to a trip to the Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula -- whether it be Hollywood Star guides, books on the strange and bizarre, on local hikes, eating in the city, and so forth. Still, in the pages of those fourteen-hundred or so books, you will not likely find a book anything like this one. In its pages, three Southern California natives (no transplants, however long) have dug into the full depth and breadth of Los Angeles history, from its humble beginnings as a small satellite to the settlement at the San Gabriel Mission, on through the boom years at the end of the 19th century, the war years, and on toward the present. The book is broken into six regions, which is a good thing, since sprawl has meant that there are simply no easy ways to "see it all" in any practical way. In addition, the book offers a number of "thematic" tours that bring together a number of the 112 sites into common groupings, like: the independent and alternative media tour or the queer politics and culture tour, or the economic restructuring and globalization tour. Along the way, the authors not only give a snapshot of historical events and the current use/condition of each site, but they provide suggestions for further exploration, nearby sites of interest, and even nearby eating recommendations.A People's Guide to Los Angeles stands as an excellent specimen of alternative tourism, of local knowledge, of place-history from the bottom up. It may not be for the tourist who's headed first to Grauman's Chinese Theater, and then to the Santa Monica Pier, before heading out to Disneyland, but it'll serve those who are interested in finding out about the Los Angeles in which most of its 10 million inhabitants (in the county) reside, as well as a wealth of information about the fascinating path it has taken since its beginnings in 1771 by forty-four settlers, A People's Guide is an indispensable reference for the native Angeleno and world traveler alike.

This is the best simple, straight-forward human anatomy book out there. This books uses a combination of real images and realistic looking models to showcase the human body, and its various systems. The images are large and positioned front and center, which draws the interest and attention of children and adults alike.Although the book does show images of penises and vaginas, they are only shown in the context of human anatomy (the body, the urinary system, reproductive systems, and pregnancy) as is appropriate for a book on anatomy. There are no depictions or descriptions of sex, making this book appropriate for all ages.I loved this book as a child, and I bought one for my daughter so she can love it as well.

I remember my mom having this book back in the 90's when she was preparing to go to nursing school. Last month (2015) I visited her and saw it. I begged her for the book for my kids (one of which loves the human body and wants to be a doctor) and she wouldn't let me have it because she said she still uses it (even after being a nurse for all these years). And it's in great shape still! So I bought my own.My daughter stepped on something and cut the bottom of her toe. While preparing for her checkup (she's a Doc McStuffins fan) we looked at the book and she was able to learn about her foot, her skin, and why she saw blood. I LOVE this book! When my kids grow up and visit me with their kids and beg for mine, I hope this book is still in print (otherwise I'll have to give them mine :D ).

Straightforward and simple descriptions with realistic, cleat illustrations. Good for my curious 4 year old. I bought a few body books aimed at his age group, but he definitely prefers this more realistic approach. So don’t shy away if you think it’s too “old” for your kid.

My 7-year-old son is very inquisitive, so I bought this for him and he loves it. He has read it a few times over now. He enjoys teaching his father and me about things he has learned from the book. My favorite part of the book is that it uses technical terms for body parts which helps a child learn in a healthy and non-judgemental environment. My favorite is when he came to me with the book and had me explain how he fit in my uterus and how in the world did the doctors take him out with his big head. He was very serious and concerned that it had to of hurt me. A close second was when he came to me very seriously, and described in detail while pointing to the pictures, how gas occurred and what paths it could take to exit the body (which is a huge accomplishment for a 7 year-old boy)This book has started my son on a path of learning about all of the things that make little boys giggle and how somethings are natural and occur in everyone. It also has given him a starting place to ask questions and gain useful information about how to look at and treat his body in a positive manner.

I bought this book for my four year old daughter two months ago because she wanted to know the names of all her bones. She is still enthralled with it and asks to read it daily. If you are looking for a very basic anatomy book to introduce your young child to their body and it's functions, I would say this may be a bit much for them to take in, but if they have the basics and are starting to ask you things that require more depth (what it the name of this bone, how do your eyes move, how do we talk, etc), then this book is excellent.

Purchased for 4yr old son who is super well rounded and talks about bodies freely... the photos and info is so lovely and child appropriate that I was speechless when we rcvd this in the mail, it is gorgeous and absolutely worth the price. If you are considering this item please don't hesitate, your child will learn and grow and appreciate the detailed pictures/diagrams

This is a great book for kids - my 7 year old is very interested in all things relating to health and the human body. I got her this book - and she's been studying it for days now. It's a great level for a variety of ages, and the photos are awesome. It was a great purchase (as are most of the eyewitness DK books)...

My mother has a lot of health issues (she is pushing 90) but she keeps on ticking quite well, and she likes to know stuff about the human body. This was a great book for her.
