Three thumbs up! :) The world of the pimpernel is quite simply—awestriking. Every book in this series has just wowed me! In this one, we have the Pimpernel, of course, and Kali (she’s super awesome in this one). Yet, they aren’t the main stars in this thrilling, spine-tingling adventure. Our hero and heroine are two new players in the game. Seba, or Sebastian, is a high stakes player, forger, and ultimately, a conman. When he gets a letter that Vic, Victoria, a world-renown model, will be killed in a week’s time unless he does something, he doesn’t know what to think. Two years ago, he kissed her…and was promptly fired from that job by her father and hasn’t seen her again. But he’s never been able to stop thinking about her. Vic’s life is run by her controlling step-dad, who seriously is a psycho. Evan Bauers gave me the shivers. But with the pimpernel and his sidekicks on the job, and enlisting Seba’s help, they may be able to not only save Vic’s life, but capture a starbreaker as well, something that hasn’t been done for over 300 years. Get ready for the ride of your life with this one. It’s pretty dang awesome.

I'm not sure how I feel about the main story being framed with scenes from other points of view. I understand why it was done, but something about it made it feel like it lacked continuity. Maybe it would have felt more natural if it was in third person, but the oddity of jumping from the Pimpernell's POV at the beginning and then having the bulk of the story from two other (new) Points of view, and then going back to his point of view for the very end pulled me out of the story a little.I liked the main characters. I thought they had a good story. The book was well written, well-paced and had some really great moments. Great villain, great action. However, I vehemently object to how the romance was left at the end. It was unsatisfying, which is the biggest reason I'm leaving off a star.I'll be interested to see where this series goes. Perhaps it will turn into Jack simply framing each book for a new set of characters.

We peek just a little further into a fictitious ubersociety that keep ours in balance with subtle, focused and amazing intervention. Great premise, story, characters and pacing. My favorite books get me pumping my fists, grinning, and admiring a protagonist's courage or brilliance (etc.). Further, any good fiction keeps me reading eagerly, and surprised by what comes next. This book delivers all of the above. To score 5 stars with me, though, a book needs a little more. I hope for interlaced and converging storylines, and this book is relatively linear. A series installment might get me daydreaming about what could have been, or impatient for the next installment. Didn't happen this time. Finally, I rely on my own guesswork (rather than a well-developed subplot or a character's revealed thoughts), to anticipate how characters who got a majority of this story's print space will figure into future installments of this series. It is frustrating to be in imaginary space that I don't know the author is in with me. I would have really liked a character who, however fleetingly, filled the role of foreshadower or storyline integrator. I want to know more about the danger that looms over our Pimpernel because of the star charts of the woman he loves, and the progress made in identifying and overcoming this danger. I'm still interested in each character introduced by previous books in the series, and would have liked more of an update on more of them in this one. That said, I am still sold on the series, and plan to buy the next book. I look forward to what comes next.

This story continues the super-world view of beings classified by playing cards as diamonds, hearts, spades, etc. of different numbers, with the royals towering over them. The Big Brother always watching surveillance is as present as before, with even the bad guys fitting in the world order in a very organized manner. Everything is rational, well thought out, well planned in advance, and the only reason Jack wins is because his planning is better than the planning of the enemy. The author does an great job keeping Kali and Jack invisible and present simultaneously.Kali is thawing out as a person by the end of the story, under Cupid's (hearts) mentorship, which leads the reader to wonder if this series will arc back to the Rhea incarnation; I miss the old best friend the most, out of the old series. The entire discussion of Kali's real and pretend zodiac signs sounds like Kali is invited to fully re-create herself as a character. Jack's love interest, Clare, is absent and missed by Jack; the story works flawlessly without her, but it would be nice to see her back too. The flashes of humanity are precious on the backdrop of this high-level surveillance world. I enjoy these well-crafted stories; they work like a delicate, precise mechanism of dancers inside a music box. They capture my full attention for the moment, as I open the box and watch them, but I find that I don't miss any of these characters when I close the box.

Through the years I have read all of Sheralyn Pratt's books. I've really enjoyed them. But this new series 'The Pimpernel' is absolutely amazing. With every book in the series I get more attached to the characters. This book, the 'Starbreaker', was wonderful. You must read these books! They are adventurous and gripping and she keeps them CLEAN. I can't wait for the next episode. Thank you Sheralyn.

I really enjoyed this book-I just finished reading another book; an historical fiction about Alexander Hamilton when I came across this book. this is mostly the actual writings of letters etc of Alexander Hamilton and others with just a little commentary. It was well organized and I felt it really added to my knowledge of knowing more about Alexander Hamilton I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys reading about our American history

I enjoyed the book but would have liked to have read other peoples opinions about hamilton that weren't family

Pitty that the writer (who has a PHD so he says) did not take a deeper look at Hamilton. This is one more case of alternate facts being put forth as truth with out consideration of the evidence.

I first read Love's Executioner a few years ago and was so taken with it, I've recommended it dozens of times. Recently, I listened to the audio version Love's Executioner: & Other Tales of Psychotherapy, which was great (it also includes an interesting interview with Irvin Yalom) and I heard some things I hadn't picked up when reading it. In fact, I realized this work has such depth, it is worth revisiting again and again. What makes it so good? It contains the wisdom of a master existential therapist, who is also a gifted storyteller (Love's Executioner is non-fiction, based on real case histories, but it reads like fine fiction). And what is existential psychotherapy? It begins with the idea that our fundamental psychological dis-ease results from difficulties baked into human existence, such as our fear of death and our ultimate aloneness. Or as Yalom writes in Love's Executioner prologue: There are "four givens that are particularly relevant to psychotherapy: the inevitability of death for each of us and for those we love, the freedom to make our lives as we will, our ultimate aloneness, and, finally, the absence of any obvious meaning or sense to life. However grim these givens may seem, they contain the seeds of wisdom and redemption. I hope to demonstrate, in these ten tales of psychotherapy, that it is possible to confront the truths of existence and harness their power in the service of personal change and growth." *That paragraph captures the core blueprint of the book, but if you stopped there you'd be missing out. Like all great artists, Yalom brings those essential issues to life so you feel them in your bones. He stops our breath through the stories, intimate details, and insights into the lives of some of his extraordinary patients (or sometimes "ordinary"ish, but made extraordinary in Yalom's capable hands). The tender truth often shimmers in Love's Executioner. We see the art of psychotherapy, and thus living, practiced by a master, both as a writer and a guide to how to midwife psychological wisdom.Other reviewers here have pointed out that Love's Executioner is must reading for therapists and those undergoing psychotherapy. This is true, and Yalom, is understandably a rock star among therapist, not just for his skillful prose (he is also an accomplished novelist), but his textbooks that have been read by at least two generations of therapists. But it would be a shame if this masterwork--and I do believe it's fair to call Love's Executioner his master work--weren't read by everyone. For it has something for everyone: whether you like fiction or non-fiction. Lovers of fiction get the storytelling and intimacy of a great novel. Readers of non-fiction know these are stories of real patients and get actionable take-aways. As noted, I plan to reread or relisten to this book periodically, knowing I'll pick up something new each time. Books don't get much better than this.* In Love's Executioner, Yalom notes that he doesn't belong to a psychological school of thought. Since I see existential psychological dilemmas as true for everyone, regardless of your philosophical or religious beliefs, I tend to agree with him. That said, I do believe this is still an outlook, and that there will be others with a different outlook that will consider existential therapy a school of thought. -I originally got a promotional/review copy of the audiobook, but think it is so good, I got extra copies and have given copies to friends and coworkers.

I agree with all the positive reviews, but need to say this about the story of Betty or "Fat Lady". In the Afterword of the latest edition, Dr. Yalom defends himself and explains that he was truly honest about his counter-transference and learned a great deal from Betty. Here I would say that Dr. Yalom needs to go even further in his self-examination. My feeling is that he learned to relate to Betty as a human being ONLY because she kept losing weight, and by the end she was almost at 150 pounds - which is not obese even if she is a shorter woman. If Dr. Yalom were honest with himself, he would have to consider the possibility that he, in fact, did not learn to see fat women as human beings. And, most importantly, that he taught Betty that the only way to get a man to love her is for her to be a certain weight. She might end up in a life-time struggle with eating disorders and poor body image that Dr. Yalom, not only did not resolve, but made worse.

A friend posted a praise of Yalom's last book on facebook. Low and behold, I checked him out on amazon and decided to read Love's Executioner first: best decision ever. The book is so "honestly and openly" written that I believe it would be a good mandatory reading material for all new students in the field. The stories are fascinating, but his approach to psychotherapy and his "unconventional" human approach to each patient are what gets you. Thank you sir. And I sure loved the iast sentence of your epilogue the best. You really made me laugh. Thank you.

Fascinating stories of therapeutic relationships. Yalom writes with refreshing honesty, revealing his own struggles with preconceptions. He provides hope for elders who are considering therapy. If you are obese, disregard the negative reviews centered on Yalom’s prejudices. Find out for yourself and don’t miss this treasure.“If we stare too hard into the past, it’s easy to be overcome with regret. But now the important thing is to turn towards the future. We’ve got to think about change. What must not occur is that five years from now you look back with regret over the way you’ve lived these coming five years.”

Yalom’s clearly rooted in a psychoanalytical approach, but adjusted his modalities to best fit the client. Often his inner thoughts were shocking and amusingly relatable which was surprising and comforting. He often took the time to explain his techniques and thought process which I found helpful as a practicing licensed therapist. Some of the chapters were objectively offensive (client that had slept with therapist) and some subjectively offensive (he disclosed a dislike for obese women), but his growth his admirable and his epilogue describes his regrets and reflects on how times have changed. It’s a quick read and I think one worthy of anyone interested in pathological analysis. He also shared some powerful metaphors.

I loved this book. Beautifully written, perfect tone (occasional humor, tho it's not a comedy). It's a lovely, thoughtful, imaginative exploration of faith and how it can be contorted to harm people who are still figuring out who they are and who they want to be (Tess, in fact tries on several personas thru the text). And, how people can recover their faith, make it their own, and heal. It's at times lighthearted and at times darkly serious, not shying away from past trauma, and readers who struggle reading stories of abuse should tread carefully.I will say, after reading some of the other posted reviews, that while Tess of the Road is its own story, readers will probably enjoy it more if they read Seraphina first. Seraphina lingers in more detail over the world building, the role of dragons and the way dragons exist in this world, etc; Tess of the Road doesn't spend much time reiterating these world building elements, so I can understand why some readers might have been frustrated. I love revisiting this world and look forward to Hartman's next book!

This book is wonderful, but you have to go into it understanding that the protagonist is (intentionally) an unlikeable screw-up (with a heart of gold). To that end, I had a real issue with Tess at first. But since I love Rachel Hartman's other books, I gave it all of my attention and put my faith in her, and it paid off. Tess of the Road takes you on an amazing journey with twists you don't see coming, and gives you characters you shouldn't like but do anyway. One thing to keep in mind is that the fantasy elements here are very small—it's not a book about dueling wizards and spectacular feats of sorcery on every page. It's more about a girl coming to understand her place in the world and that she's maybe not as big of a screw-up as everyone has led her to believe.

I feel like every time I read one of Rachel Hartman's books, not only does the writing get better, but what surrounds the writing gets better. I wasn't expecting this book to cover so much ground that it did, and I definitely think the author contacted the right sensitivity readers when she wrote about a paraplegic character. But that's perhaps not a good enough reason to read the book, so let me explain why this book is so good! This book is all about Tess, a character who I believe was named after another famous Tess, Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Like Hardy's Tess, this Tess is a girl with a terrible lot in life. She was taken advantage of by a man, and had her life slip out of her control before her eyes, and now she's angry and frustrated and snippy and rude. Tess has nowhere to go... until she decides to make her own way into the world and goes on an adventure on The Road.I came in expecting this book not to be as mystical or magical as the books about Seraphina, if only because Tess is a normal girl without dragon's blood and no special abilities otherwise. But I was wrong! Tess journeys with a quigult friend who is on a very spiritual pilgrimage and who lends a lot of fun and creativity to the story. And even the mundane parts of the story are very entertaining. Tess discovers more about herself and it's satisfying to watch her grow and change throughout the book.I very much enjoyed this book, and I'm very much looking forward to reading more of Tess's adventures. Super recommended!

Wow. As a young woman reading this book I was a little nervous that it was going to be targeted towards a younger audience, and while it is about a teenage girl, it strikes some awesome chords of the truth that young troubled women find in growing up. I feel like so many young women have the same experiences that Tess has and while shes so unlikable in some aspects, I really feel like I felt the same kind of unlikable when I was Tess' age. I felt for her. This book was painful, but it was so beautiful. Highly recommend to young women who had trouble finding their footing in the world as youth/teenagers. Love it!

Tess Dombegh is the younger half sister of Seraphina, the champion of the two prior books set in this beautifully rendered world of saints and dragons, and it is Tess's story we pick up in this next chapter. From the previous books, we know Seraphina's younger siblings mostly as bratty inconveniences for Seraphina to bear, but in this book, Tess is given her chance to stand center stage alongside such richly developed supporting characters that it could certainly be read as a stand alone (though don't skip Seraphina and Shadow Scale altogether -- they are lovely as well). The story follows our "brat", Tess, as she begins to reject the incredibly stifling life she felt she deserved after committing heinous sins (the details of which are slowly revealed over the course of the novel). She has been lead to believe (as many deeply fundamentalist religions convey) that her very existence as a woman is sinful in and of itself, and that she has committed the worst sin by "falling" as no good woman should. So, at age 17, facing decisions made for her by her deeply religious mother and her incompetent father, she strikes out on her own, finding company in her childhood quigutl friend, who sets an adventurous quest at her feet for them to follow. And follow she does, revealing her anything -but-sinful nature as she encounters many brilliant characters along the way. This borders on a spoiler, but I feel it's important to mention a CW: this book deals with rape, sexual shame, and ultimately, infant loss. While I'm no longer in a place where these types of storylines would destroy me, I found myself incredibly sad and tearful many times as her story was revealed, and feel most responsible sharing that warning with those who may *not* be in a place to read such moving and detailed descriptions of sex without consent, without understanding consent, against a very young teenager, and such details of premature birth/subsequent infant death.
