I wanted to learn more about Dyer's works & thought his take on the Tao would be a perfect place to start as I too have studied it for many years. Alas. I understand he has a large & loyal following & this review will doubtless receive negative votes but seriously: this man presents himself as Lao-tzu!In the introduction he goes to some pains to point out that his own name & it's meaning can be morphed into the title of the Tao itself: WAYne Dyer (a dyer being, in his description "one who adds light or color",) thus he is a Way Adding Light - in his mind at least. He then describes awakening before 4am, meditating, etc. to get himself into the space to write using 'automatic writing', by channeling Lao-tzu. The arrogance of this passage stopped me cold. I went on to read one of his expositions on a chapter of the Tao & it was drivel: quotes from other authors & a poorly understood rephrasing of the chapter words itself. If you want a modern, easily approachable non-literal *rendering* of the Tao I highly recommend Tao Te Ching; if you want to study the Tao more deeply I recommend combining Mitchell's work with a true translation such as Tao Te Ching: Text Only Edition or any of the number of excellent translations available.

I have a lot of mixed feelings about this book.As I was reading it, I had this constant yin yang banter going on in my head:"What? Wait! That's not right!""Oh, that's good. I like that.""No no no - mindless passivity is not the way of the Tao.""Oh wait, mindful action - that's better. I like that."On the positive side, there is a lot of wisdom in this book.On the negative side, I don't think Dr. Dyer actually understands the Tao very deeply at all.Apparently, he spent a year studying the Tao Te Ching in order to write this book.By comparison, I know folks who've spent decades studying the Tao Te Ching and would tell you plainly that they're still working on understanding it.I don't know Dr. Dyer or any of his other work, and it's possible that he's enlightened enough to "get it" after only a year of study. Certainly sometimes he's spot on.Other times, however, it seems to me he misses the point and substitutes his own world view for that of Lao Tzu.One of the biggest problems for me, I think, is that he overlays the Tao with God - explicitly here and there, but more importantly implicitly throughout the book. From my understanding, the Tao of Lao Tzu has little in common with the typical Western view of God- and that indicates to me a lack of real understanding about the Tao.If you like Dr. Dyer's other efforts, I suspect you'll like this book.If you're looking for deep exposition on the nature of the Tao and how to live The Way of Virtue, I think you're better off looking elsewhere.

Lin Yutang, who was nominated for a Nobel Prize, said the Tao Te Ching was the one book, above all others, in Oriental literature that should be read. Dyer utilized ten translations of the Tao, from which he cobbled together his own verses. Then, he writes several pages of his thoughts and interpretations on each one. The Tao is a very profound book, very deep, and difficult to understand. Commentary is particularly helpful. I’ve read almost everything written by Wayne Dyer and this stands out as one of his best works. Wayne’s explanations bring the Tao to life and are understandable and inspirational. However, the text can be repetitive and appears to purport to somewhat of an agenda, based on ideas expressed in his previous writings. The reader is continually advised to surrender his/her ego, give away their possessions (at least, give something away), don’t talk so much, avoid being aggressive or confrontational and live simply and peacefully. This type of life is hard to juxtapose with contemporary American society. Yet, the Tao is meaningful, multilayered and mysterious. The challenge is to integrate and apply its teachings in one’s life; it is a volume to read again and again. It may be the most powerful book, I’ve ever experienced.

As I read this book, I began to feel it's message was redundant- different verses but the same interpretations. At about the 67th verse, and through the 81st, I realized that this book was exactly what I needed to be reading at this precise time in my life. The redundancy was necessary because I just wasn't "getting it" for the first 66 verses. At the conclusion of the read, I feel some significant personal revelations. I have many highlights to go back over, and a lot of work to do applying and "doing the Tao."

For the first time I can actually understand what is being said. Dr. Dyer's summary after each verse is making the verses crystal clear for me. I am so grateful. I have read and enjoyed many translated versions but I have found no one that explains quite like Dr. DYER. It's very much like seeing after a period of blindness. I would strongly recommend this beautiful work for anyone wanting understanding.

The Tao that can be named is not the eternal Tao. I lost interest with this analysis of the Tao Te Ching by the fifth chapter. I have come to believe that if you are at all interested in the Tao that it's probably best to own as many different translations as you can find and read them over and over as you go through life; mostly for inspiration as trying to understand the Tao via rational thought or analysis takes you further from the Tao. For me, as the decades have gone by I find things within the Tao Te Ching that I read years ago, that seemed insignificant at a previous reading, to take on sudden and deep significance as I've moved further down the path. The lesson I've learned is that although Wayne Dyer has his interpretation(s) those are within and "for" him. My interpretations are within and for me. The grokking of the Tao cannot be bestowed upon one by another being. Even having become aware that this is true hasn't stopped me from looking into another's perceptions in the hope I might gain more insight but this book, once again, reminds me that you can't get it that way.

Review

Praise for The Little Stranger:"A classic gothic page-turner."--USA Today"Waters, a master at stoking anticipation, withholds the truth about her ghost until the final pages...subtle, surprising, and deeply, deeply chilling."--NPR"Haunted by the spirits of Henry James and Edgar Allan Poe...Waters is just one turn of the screw away from 'The Fall of the House of Usher.' She keeps the lightening flashing in every gloomy chapter, and you can't help but gasp, 'It's alive!'"--The Washington Post "Sarah Waters is an excellent, evocative writer, and this is an incredibly gripping and readable novel."--The New York Times Book Review  (Editor's Choice)"With its subtly orchestrated suspense and spot-on portrayal of English class divisions, Waters's literary ghost story delights."--People"A virtuoso writer...If you want a ghost story that creeps up your spine, The Little Stranger delivers."--The Seattle Times "A near-perfect gothic novel... It's an astonishing performance, right down to the book's mournful and devastating final sentence."-- Salon "Waters creates an atmosphere of quiet dread that's unnerving and compelling."--Time"Marvelous and truly spooky."--The Boston Globe"Rich with historic detail and slow, deliberate building toward the revelation of its secrets, [The Little Stranger] delights even as it leaves you unnerved."--The Miami Herald "Like the gloomy English weather, an air of impending doom lingers over every chapter of The Little Stranger...an up-all-night page-turner that provides a cogent dose of social commentary."--The Cleveland Plain Dealer

Blurbed by the likes of Stephen King for its exceptional creepiness, "The Little Stranger" will disappoint those who are looking for a page turner in the mold of the American master of Gothic horror. Yes, the novel has all the trappings of a standard haunted house thriller: a once-grand, remotely situated mansion; owners reduced to shabby gentility; things that inexplicably go bump in the night; violent disfigurements and mysterious deaths. But all this is only scaffolding for a meticulously thoughtful examination of a society emerging from a devastating war into economic and social upheaval - Britain in 1947. Add the indelible poison of the English class system and an apparently trustworthy narrator who turns out to be anything but, and you have a richly satisfying novel of substantial depth and genuine, open-ended mystery. I've not read Sarah Waters' other books, but on the evidence of this one she's an uncommonly gifted storyteller who's not afraid to take her time or to challenge the reader to figure out what she's really up to. "The Little Stranger" is too smart to be merely "chilling." It doesn't leave you with the satisfaction of "understanding," of seeing all the loose ends tidied up. If it has a fault, it's the fault of mercilessness. It's a haunted house story in the best sense - one that doesn't just rattle a crumbling mansion, but one you won't get out of your mind.

Well written novel about a working man stiff who is a doctor to the local countryside and gentry. Through a home visit he becomes involved with the Ayer's Family the local scions who have fallen on hard times.Analysts and readers will debate whether this is a Ghost, Poltergeist or Psychological novel. The atmosphere is adequately Gothic and yet despite the fine writing the story spirals to shoulder shrugging conclusion. In the end heartbreak and death seem the destiny of all involved. Ms. Waters offers a keen observation on England's Working Class and declining Gentry in post World War II.Reviewers will want to know - did I enjoy the book? And my answer is yes but I found it to be frustrating read as I wanted to slap silly all the main characters for their obtuseness. Worth a read, hard to put down but don't expect to be satisfied in the end. Not your typical ghost story - so leave your paranormal baggage at home

I loved this novel––first one I've read by Sarah Waters, and I plan to read everything else she's written. Though reviewers suggest that The Little Stranger is atypical, I trust that I'll love her other work as well. She's a gifted novelist, and I look forward to being taken on whatever imaginative, historical, sexual, psychological, or sociological trips she cares to explore. This novel, for me, never drags (as some reviewers complained--what was their problem?). The world it creates is solid, built of revelatory, convincing detail. Its conflicts unfold with subtle horror––and just as I thought there was no more to reveal, the book ended with yet another "turn of the screw" that made me want to go back and reread the beginning. I began seeing the fine thread that had been been there throughout, clear all the way to the last few ghastly sentences! The following may need a spoiler alert, so beware: One of the things Waters does so brilliantly in The Little Stranger is to let the reader's suspicions of the narrator's unreliability grow so gradually. His steadfast rationalism, even after a colleague offers a plausible way to read the presence of a ghost that differs from the narrator's pathologizing of any who disagree with him, begins to coincide with our creeping sense that he's so desperate to claim the family and house and to assert his control that he can't see or hear the truths spoken to him by the woman he wants to possess. I couldn't tear myself away from this book––intelligent, pleasurable, and compelling!

This book started out well and the descriptions of places, people and events are finely drawn and drew me in at the beginning. This sense of involvement with the characters continued for the first half of the book, and with it great writing in regard to foreshadowing of possible occurrences to come. After that it seemed, for me, a bit strenuously- long in the narrative with lengthy conversations between the characters, long descriptions of events, and a sense that something important was going to happen, but it took such a long time to get there. Usually I love immersing myself in lengthy novels and feeling connected to a different time and place, but this time I found myself annoyed and impatient with the people involved.

Imagine a cuisine where the appetizer IS the meal. No matter its artful presentation, even the most tasty hors d'oeuvre will not only leave you hungry but chafing at its parsimony. This is not to say that The Little Stranger is a skimpy book -- it's broad, detailed and engrossing. Yet, at the end, there's an appetite unsatisfied. I suppose we could debate the meaning of "ghost" or "madness" or how they might even work in tandem, but it doesn't preclude a feeling of somehow being cheated of a full meal.

I have read every word. . . sometimes over and over. . . and transcribed many of them into a notebook. The strength of this book is in the heart and soul of the author — an author who apparently has thought long, hard, and sincerely about such concepts as “purpose,” “meaning,” and “faith,” and who understands that sometimes (or always) truth can be communicated better in a fictional story than in a systematic dogma. These honest stories are filled with trauma and hope, tragedies and blessings. Sometimes I wish real life wasn’t so real. . . and life wasn’t surrounded by death. Giacomino Nicolazzo clearly states that he will not explain God to you. In fact, unless you completely buy into the “with you, within you, around you” life, you won’t see God in some of these stories or you will see the total absence of a true, loving God. But what you will see is realistic characters at crossroads in their lives wrestling with choices that either cloud or clear up their vision and determine their fate. It takes a special insight to see God in everything, and I didn’t grasp that insight until 300 pages in.At first I was disturbed that the publication editing was not as fine detailed as it could have been. You will notice some obvious mistakes. The same character’s name is spelled differently in adjacent paragraphs, wrong words are type-set and right words are missed, homonyms creep in, new edits forgot to remove the first draft. But these are small and far between. Half way through I realized two things. This is from an Italian company publishing in English. And the mistakes actually contribute to the stories authenticity. Don’t read this as a refined publication with the Oxford English Dictionary stamp of approval, but rather read each story a personal letter from a close friend telling you the most intense event of their life with all the personal emotion they can muster. How it can be written and published so cheaply I don’t know. The illustrations for each chapter are full of beauty and meaning. The “Introduction” is worth the price of admission. And chapter 15, “Heaven,” will take you feet off solid ground and plant them insecurely on the total mystery of all life and love.

I highly recommend this book of short stories, to everyone, you will be inspired by these lovely stories.I have read all of Giacomino Nicolazzo’s books, and I must say he is a great story teller. There was something very special about these vignettes, they touched your heart and soul.Kudos to Mr. Nicolazzo... keep them coming!

I just finished this book. One of the best that I have read. But the book you will love it!

Very touching and poignant stories. I gave one as a gift and they loved it. I will read this over and over as the stories are real. I look forward to more books by Mr Nicolazzo

I purchased the paperback book and read it in one sitting! The author has a very creative and descriptive style of writing that makes you part of the story and not just a reader!

This book will touch your heart and move your soul. Inspirational reading. Bravo Gia and God bless

Mr. Nicolazzo is an amazing writer. He has the most magical way of touching your heart...right where we all need to be touched. You feel as if he is speaking directly to you...as if he somehow knows the life-lesson you need in your life at this very moment. Truly Heaven sent.~ Elaine Ludian

This is not just another book of short stories, one you put down on a whim! Gia is the master story teller, who soon becomes your friend & maybe even your confidant. I felt like we were sitting together sharing a glass of wine, chatting..yet each made me THINK, or triggered memories from my past, and always made me smile! Reading these, you will see and feel God all around us, and how He is waiting to be seen in our everyday life.
