IF you are a PFloyd fan, this is a MUST readFirst, I will make this simple: if you really like Pink Floyd, this is an indispensable book to have and an absolute must-read. If you are not, then it is probably way too much information. But, oh my, what a brilliant book this is! Nick Mason is a witty, slightly dark-humored, self-deprecating,detailed wordsmith. I did not want this book to end. It is a wonderful recollection and reflection back into the history of the iconic band Pink Floyd. If you are looking for sex, drugs, and rock n' roll, this is NOT it. Just a look back and look through a band and its music. The bumps and bruises along the way (read: Syd and Roger) are handled forthrightly, with dignity and without backstabbing. We are given the basic facts with Mr. Mason's subtle observations and subjective thoughts, but not delivered with rancor or over-emotionalism. Mason does not take himself very seriously and time and time again we are delighted to read his thoughts about himself and others with what I can only imagine were delivered with a wry smile. The book is offered with intelligence and love and I came away feeling as if I had sat across the table from him as he expounded on his life with this magnificent group of musicians who became terribly dear to his heart. Mason comes across as being grateful for the opportunity and wants the reader to understand how it all came to be. A fabulous bonus for the reader is the inclusion of dozens and dozens of terrific photographs. The book was released just after the Floyd reunion at Live8 and before the deaths of Syd Barrett and Richard Wright. Again, if you are a Pink Floyd fan, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

I have a couple books about Pink Floyd and this one, by Nick Mason himself, is the most boring one. LOL. Don't get me wrong, I read the whole thing and did enjoy some of it, but some of it, too, was more than I really cared to know. Like stuff about how much money they were making and finances. It often had to do with why the members of the band got into various arguments and fights with each other, but it was also more in-depth about their finances than I needed to know. I guess if you're into that kind of thing then this would be a bonus to you, and while I do enjoy finding out about how the non-glamorous under-workings go on behind a big band, it was still a bit too much, IMO. I nodded off a few times. Still, there was information in this book that only an insider would know, particularly a band member, so like I said, there's also a lot of info here that is not covered in other books about the history of Pink Floyd. I especially liked the details about the early years and how relationships began and developed among the band members early on.What is annoying is that Mason made several amendments and "updates" to the book after it was published, and what I didn't know at first was which "version" of the book I was getting. I got it at a discount because it was NOT an updated version, but I was unaware of this until after I purchased the book & it was sometime later. I'm not even sure of what content was added or if it's worth it to seek out the most recent version of the book or not, but once you publish a book, don't keep adding updates and afterthoughts. I just pisses people off. I can't even tell you what to look for if you want to buy the most recent version of the book, myself...only that if you find it considerably cheaper, it's likely the older version. At any rate, if you're a Floyd fan who likes to know details about the band above and beyond the music, this books is not only a good read but it's coming from a practically indisputable source, one of the band members. Floyd is one of the most enigmatic bands of our time and catching more than a glimpse about the inner-workings is a thrill. Lots of good stuff in here, and more. It's a nice coffee table book for a softcover and quite heavy, large, and stuffed full of photos you may not have seen before.

A great book about the history of Pink Floyd from beginning to end. There is no trash talk or bashing the other members, no dirty little secrets revealed, it is just a good, walk through description of life as a member of Pink Floyd from the only member that was there from the entire time. Nick's added humor makes it quite funny at times as I catch myself laughing out loud sometimes. The pictures are excellent. I'm glad I got the "coffee table" version, because that is where it is and where it will remain, right next to "When Giants Roamed the Earth" about Led Zeppelin.

I long searched for this book as if drifting on an endless river (see what I did there?) but failing to find purchase. Now I know why: Nick was preparing an update; and it was surely worth the wait. He brings a balanced, thoughtful and often laugh-out-loud humorous twist to Floyd history that only comes from one who lived/endured/relished/perhaps at times bemused by it. Buy this book. Savor every carefully crafted word.

The real info in this book is between the lines... Pink Floyd was a silver spoon in there mouths band given every break a British ban could get. To record your first album in Abby Road studios says much. hey were all the BBC at a time the music was not up to speed yet. The caliber of people helping them was simply astonishing yet, there first albums were not very good. There is also an odd Luciferain tone to some early tracks including a song called Lucifer. The dark side of the moon was a studio masterpiece but it was not just the band making it come out as it did. The "whos who" of Abby road helped in many ways. "Wish you were here" and "Shine on you crazy diamond" are said to be a tribute to Sid, who was once the heart and soul of the band. However things said in the book make me question that as true. Like with Peter Green (who started Fleetwood Mac) the people behind Floyd (and the band) seemed to want Sid out of the way and away he went. The "on the road" stories are funny and the best parts of the book.... Other parts have turned me off to pink floyd as I now hear things in there music I suspected but never knew for sure.
