Not only a moving and interesting autobiographical story, this book has incredible recipes and beautiful photos. A definite must buy!
Thought it was going to be another recipe book but it was more of a coming to grips with morality story. The exotic locale and the story of the brothers and the obvious devotion of the daughter made it a real page turner. Plus, the scrumptuous recipes make for a real page turner. It was the first memoir of a chef that made me want to know more, read more, see more. Could be a great movie!
Kitty Morse has a writing style that takes you by the hand as she weaves through daily activities and concerns in Morocco. She shares her love of food and cooking buy way of recipies andengaging photos taken by her husband.All the preceding reviews are generousand appropriate. Don't hesitate. It's a great read.
If you've never been to Morocco (I have) or eaten Moroccan food (ditto) this magic carpet ride of a book will take you into parts of that country that most tourists will never see. Kitty Morse's saga of her struggle to keep the centuries-old pasha's palace that her British father purchased in a walled, seaside village south of Casablanca is riveting enough. Add to that: Morse's memories of growing up in Morocco with a French mother and a colorful 'foodie' pied noir family; her character sketches of her Moroccan friends, local bureaucrats, her faithful retainer and master chef Bouchaib; and their complex, frustrating and often hilarious relationships, and you have the makings of a great movie script. A single recipe at the end of each chapter has you flipping back to find the story it relates to. The rich collection of photos of food and of Morocco, taken by Kitty's husband Owen, are good enough to rate their own book. This is a surprisingly weighty tome for a paperback, but like "Under the Tuscan Sun" it stirs food and life into a riveting and mouthwatering tale.
an amazing book full of authentic recipes, authentic characters , and authentic insight into an entirely different culture from mine. i didn't have to leave my arm chair to take a trip to morocco with ms. morse. instead she's my personal tour guide of moroccan kitchens through an array of delicious recipes and delicious photographs that have ignited my interest in cooking new foods. three for the price of one--great stories, beautiful photographs and mouthwatering recipes.
I picked up this book on vacation while visiting the Balboa park in San Diego. It's a very personal cookbook that weaves food, family, memories and architecture all in one splendid read.
