If you are looking for a step-by-step guided pathway to becoming a CTO, then I'm not sure this book will satisfy.
This should be a $2.99 collection of notes book, note a $25 business book.Chapter 11 - When to hire consultants - 3 screens on my phoneChapter 12 - How to analyze failure - 3 screensChapter 13 - How to bounce back - 3 screens...I get it, this is not the typical padded-with-stories business book, it's a self-published set of ~barely blog post content, that's fine, but it shouldn't be priced like it.
Lot of open doors, nice assembly of experiences and rules of thumb.Not in depth at all, more of a blog like quality then really a book. Steep price for this.
I most enjoyed the process of what he did, how he did it and the outcomes of his journey from developer to CTO.Not a how to step by step but more of a "I did this in the beginning", now go look for the solutions you need.
Really enjoyed reading Modern CTO. I’m a programmer looking to learn more about the industry and this has been an excellent resource. I like how Joel relates his personal experience to each topic in the book. We can all learn how to be a better technical leader from Modern CTO

Enjoyed the book. I love personal experiences, especially when they relate to my own journey as a CTO and Co-Founder. I highly recommend tuning into the podcasts. The book is just the beginning!
