I wanted to try my hand at writing for younger readers to see if I could create the same experience for others. Question: What inspired the plot of Celia and the Fairies? Karen McQuestion: Fireflies! Growing up I was always fascinated by the flashing glow of fireflies at night. Something about them seemed magical, and from a distance it was easy to imagine that they might be fairies. And who knows? Maybe sometimes the lights we assume to be fireflies are indeed fairies. I like to think that almost anything is possible. As a kid reader, I loved stories where the main character was someone like me, an average person going about their usual routine of school and home, when something extraordinary occurs. And in Celia and the Fairies, that’s exactly what happens. I guess I wrote the kind of book I would have loved when I was young. Karen McQuestion: A few adult readers have said that Celia and the Fairies has a good message, and it does, but I’m glad that I haven’t gotten that same comment from kids. Ten-year-old Celia is excited when her beloved grandmother moves in with her family. To begin with, Grammy’s arrival means that she won’t have to go to her obnoxious neighbor Paul’s house after school. She also loves Grammy’s stories about fairies who reside in the nearby woods. Her parents say the fairies aren’t real, but Celia learns otherwise when she meets Mira, a fairy who warns her about a nefarious woman, Vicky McClutchy, who plans to take over Celia’s family’s toy company, and it’s up to Celia to stop her. Although she is supported by Grammy, the fairies, magic, and surprisingly, Paul, Celia must ultimately use her own courage and wits to thwart Vicky. The characters lack dimension, and the moral messages are heavy, with themes of penitence, forgiveness, and fairies as “good spirits,†versus evil “shadow things†that spawn human greed and selfishness. Celia and the Fairies is indeed a very enjoyable and easy to read fairy tale. In addition, it discusses a very current issue - the taking of private homes for public use in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court's 2005 decision in Kelo v. City of New London. As for values, I was particularly intrigued by the fairies' rules 2 and 3: that you can't make anyone do what they don't want to, and that there must be a good outcome for everyone involved. As Celia noticed, solving some problems within those rules can be difficult. Overall, not just for 9-12 year olds. Even this adult didn't want to put it down once started, and was happy to read such a wholesome and creative story.
An unhappy child loses her best friend because she takes and breaks one of his prize possessions and then cheats to get a science fair trophy that he expects to win. She longs to have him apologize to her for slighting her, but never realizes that he would also long for her to apologize to him. Finally his daughter makes a special wish for the bitter woman that changes everything, even a bitter woman's heart. Everyday magic that works even in a world without fairies and magic flutes. Or maybe this magic works in our everyday world because our everyday world is more magical than most adults believe. Either way, a satisfying story about two families divided that grow closer again because of a brave little girl who tries to do a good deed.
Celia and the Fairies is a Wonderful Read for every age group . I am way past senior citizen age and the second I saw that it was written by Karen and when I saw the cover on this book I knew I wanted to read it . In my generation we read Dick, Jane and Spot. HaHa. I can still vividly remember those books and also remember being a small child growing up on a farm. Instead of fairies, we had magical Lightning bugs that glowed at night and we could see hundreds of them in the fields fluttering around twinkling in the dark. Just like Mira does.Going back to one's childhood day's bring's back so many wonderful memories and this book did just that.I am sure that the youngsters who read this book will remember it forever and this story also sends an important message about being good vs being bad to children. I also could of played Grandmother Celia and relate stories like this to my children and grandchildren and hopefully my great grandchildren.I am an avid reader of myster/light thriller,light romance but I have to say that after I read one of Karen's books I was and am absolutely hooked on the way she writes and when one of her books comes to Kindle I put aside my mystery book or whatever else I am reading and start on Karen's stories.Another Great read Karen for the youngsters and the oldsters !!!! Keep them coming. If all your future stories equal the quality of the six that I have read of your's, I am going to start saying Ditto...Ditto...Ditto
I found Celia and Fairies to be fun, refreshing and uplifting. It is a book for all age groups, although children may find it most enjoyable and even beneficial, The book carries a both positive message and clever life lesson in the story. My lady also read this book and liked it as much as I do.
Here's a book with something hard to find these days: a magical kid's tale without the fate of the world hanging in the balance. Celia and her family have problems - don't get me wrong. It's just that these problems don't involve anyone getting murdered, tortured, or kidnapped. And it's not that I didn't love Harry Potter. I did. (Still do.) But does every kid's book have to take things to the same extreme (or more)? No, and "Celia and the Fairies" proves that. You can still have a wonderful, engaging tale without supreme evil lurking around every corner.In this book, we are allowed to enter into Celia's life and her family's history. We get to see McQuestion's version of the fairy world and the role fairies play in our world. And we get to wonder how it's all going to work out in the end (we're pretty sure that it will).The chapters are short. Very short. I'd say that 3 pages per chapter is the average. This makes this book a nice transition book for bedtime stories if you're moving away from picture books. (As another reviewer mentioned, McQuestion does let the cat out of the bag about Santa, so if you're still maintaining that Santa is real, you'll need to re-word or skip that paragraph.) McQuestion also does that thing I remember from kid's chapter books when I was growing up, where the end of each chapter is a bit of a cliffhanger.All and all, a great little book. I definitely recommend it for ages 5 and up.
I don't generally review the books I read, but this one was different. If any of you are looking for a book for a pre-teen or young teen girl, this is an excellent choice. It is well written and holds your attention. This is a charming book.
Like I said, wonderful book! Very clean. One does not need to use cuss words to have a good book. In fact, I believe bad language is not in good taste for any book. The villian in this book was really bad and I could not figure out how Karen was going to make things turn out for the good people. Even though the villian was an absolute villian, Karen did not use cuss words to make her bad. Thank you, Karen! I would recommend this book to everyone.
This is obviously a children's book, but I read it anyway for a change of pace. It's an adorable story about honesty, bravery, and acceptance. It'd make a cute movie, too! I could just imagine a Pixar film as I read through it. I quite enjoyed it.
