While I agree with the other reviewers that this book is informative and easy to read, it uses a form of the Periodic Table that is no longer used by the IUPAC (the international chemistry people). The author's version contains 8 groups, whereas the currently accepted version has 18. So if you'll need to work with the Periodic Table at some point (like in a chemistry class), you'll either need another table, or you'll need to amend the tables in the book.
This book is helpful in cracking into the language of Chemistry. It explains how chemicals are assemble and named, and what chemical reactions are. It goes on to show how using a little bit of Math and you can make reasonable predictions.The Periodic Table is show as a key to making predictions of the properties of elements and the bonds they make.The book takes a lot of the scariness out of Chemistry, so that the reader can appreciate how Chemistry can explain Science and Nature.
Being out of school for many decades , between what I forgot and didn't know in the first place , I was at a loss in helping my daughter with chemistry . After reading the first 55 pages , I was caught up enough to be able to be a substantial help. Very well written book.
I haven't studied Chemistry since high school (late 60's). Only wish I had this book then!
Practical, well-written intro or review. Perfect for the guy or gal who doesn't want to make it a career, but wants factual knowledge.
great chemistry book for kids
Cute in a nerdy way! Explains concepts and has a little fun with it also. Who would have thought of a crossword puzzle from the periodic table? I had 1 semester of chemistry in high school back in the early 70's and that was enough of a background for me. Good layout for my Kindle Fire and well edited.
A great discussion of the periodic table. First time I feel like I am beginning to understand how it works.
