This has also been helpful in identifying verses to memorize.I have mixed feelings about the use of multiple translations. While most are translations I use, there are a couple of versions that I do not generally use due to their level of "dynamic equivalence". That being said, their level of readability can be valuable in this application.I especially like the Kindle format. I can keep it on my phone for those times when I am not near my books. It is always easier to find that way also. The price of the Kindle format is great too!

I have owned a couple of copies of this gook over the years. I always find it handy when preparing to counsel someone to refresh my memory as to where to find the relevant texts for the issue at hand.

Easy to read and reference when working with a client. Makes the counseling smoother when side tracked with a problem that has not been dealt with.

I would have given it 5 stars but - the usage of a mixture of different Bible translations could be confusing to those you are counseling with.

very helpful when searching for scriptures for different topics. its good sound reference book.

The expanded edition is great. It covers more up-to-date issues in counseling along with additional scripture references to topics found in previous editions. The spiral binding like the older editions is a great help when I'm on the phone or speaking with someone in the office and do not want to be holding a book. It is true to its name, "Quick Scripture Reference".

This book is GREAT!!! Use it daily in my life. I don't use it for counseling at all, but it is so easy to use and it is always right on target and easy to find scripture that relates to the issue you are looking up. I would definitely recommend this product to everyone !!!

Rather than a dry recitation of what we know of Socrates's life and works, Johnson looks at themes in Socrates' life --bravery; his love for Athens; an absolute commitment to doing what was right and just; and irony-- and uses them to illustrate those things that should be valuable in our own lives, and thus improve our lives for being valued. Johnson reads much into the texts and context, sometimes making assumptions and presenting them as facts because he's sure they must be true, and there is the occasional odd error, but the broad lessons Johnson teaches (or, rather, relates what Socrates taught) and the beauty in his writing make them forgivable. The Kindle version is clean, with no typos that I could spot, though it is rather expensive for such a short book.Recommended as an introduction to the person, to help make the philosophy more accessible.

Paul Johnson has a unique ability to summarize a topic in a brief but very informative manner. Having enjoyed his bios of Napoleon and Churchill, I jumped on this when I saw it, and I was not disappointed.As usual, Johnson's text reads easily. The editing of my Kindle edition was a little sloppy in places, but not so bad as to hamper my enjoyment of the book.Johnson covers Socrates' life well, and the reader comes away with a good feel for who he was--a physically unattractive man who believed in Athens and its people and who sought to bring out the best in them. Thanks to his student, Plato, we know what Socrates believed and how he taught.According to Johnson, Socrates was a highly principled man who loved Athens, fought for Athens, taught Athenians of all levels of society and paved the way for monotheism. In the end, he was unjustly sentenced to death, but died a noble death continuing to exemplify the principles he treasured. In the process, Socrates became the most influential philosopher of all time.The primary question that Johnson left unanswered for me was how Socrates supported himself. It is clear that Socrates lived a simple life, but it is unclear exactly how Socrates actually supported even his minimal needs.This is an excellent introduction to Socrates. Highly recommended.

Johnson spends a great deal of effort untangling the thought and character of Socrates from that of Plato, mostly to good effect. However, he ends up presenting a Socrates who shares our contemporary values in somewhat unrealistic fashion. Nevertheless, the book reveals the context and basic outlook of Socrates the Athenian sage rather well. Overall, a very good and easy to read introduction. Recommended.

I actually found this book to be good. You have to keep in mind that this book is largely an interpretation of who Socrates might have been based upon what little evidence we have. I'm not saying I agree with the author's interpretation entirely, but I enjoyed the theory.One reviewer commented that the author claimed Socrates would've voted Republican. I didn't find that anywhere. I did notice that the author felt Socrates was a conservative person, and from that maybe some readers thought the writer was suggesting something else.I bought this book because so little is out there about a father of Western philosophy, a person who deeply influenced Plato and some of the other most important figures of ancient times. I really wish I could've met Socrates, and the author gave me a taste of what that might've been like.The older I get, the more I agree with some of the principles Socrates supposedly upheld.

Good. Not terribly in depth. The "A Man for our times" connection is not developed in a satisfying way. Like Jesus of Nazareth, Socrates did not leave behind a body of written work. We know him as others have wished us to.

I'm so impressed by this book that I have mailed a copy to my grandson's classical academy. I recommend that the school give a copy to each ninth grader. They read some Socratic writings.

When you first think of Socrates it is not always in modern terms. Not only is Socrates a "modern man" in every sense of the word, he is a man across time. When the mind opens darkness flees. The Socratic method of questioning is really simplisticity codified. A child asks why because they don't know and are not afrad to say so. The same with Socrates - his ego does not get in the way - only his mind and it is wonderfully open. I recommend this if nothing else as a method to open the mind and expand our individual universe.

This is a must have, amazing, insightful book for anyone who loves inside, sometimes salacious stories about Hollywood. I really believe most of them are accurate, unlike all the magazines at the grocery store checkout, because I used to hang with a lot of movie people who knew the tre events.

The length the studios would go to protect their investment is eye opening. The stories are universal in scandal but for the times they happened it was covered up. I felt sad for the "stars". When money and idol worship is thrust upon you, forgetting who you are is a downward fall to nowhere. The studios were all about coverups.

I enjoyed this book as a kid and, with the exception of random underlining of words, it remains a fun - but haunting - read.

I read this book as a teenybopper and read it again now in my thirties. It's a fun read with all the classic highs and very lows of Hollywood. You may have to withhold believing everything as Anger puts it, but you will be shocked at the truth of most events chronicled in these pages. And the good part is, there are a lot of them.I'd recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the lives of the old rich and famous. It's fun to compare it to now!

Although a lot of it was about actors that I didn't know, it was still quite eye opening about that era. Mary Astor was a freak! ha ha! No disrespect and she was a great actress, but WOW!!!!!!!!

A fun read. Most scandals here are in the early twentieth century through the forties. Some names are obscure, but their stories are interesting. Would recommend if you like movie history.

This is basically early gossip magazines in a book formant.

Boy, this peels back the covers on old school Hollywood drama and scandal!!!

Excellent book for children aged 7-12Review from a 10 YEAR OLD avid reader of graphic novels:I like this book because it was really good and interesting and i think it was an amazing book to read.There was lots of action and fighting and time travel. I didn't pick 5 stars because there were some parts in the book were i couldn't understand parts and some parts were weird which could be kinda interesting. So i really really LIKE the book. You should read it one day and find out how amazing this book really is. CLEOPATRA in space is one of my favorite books in the world. Got the complete set for my daughter. Actually met the author in person and got him to autograph the first volume. Great read for boys and girls getting into comics or already into them. I'd say good for 10 and up with a proficient reading level

My son couldn't wait for this book to be released after reading the first one. The imagery, humor, and storyline kept him very interested. He's read it a few times. It's easy enough for a 3rd grade reading level but interesting enough for children and adults of any age.

One of the best books I’ve ever read. I’m half Jordanian and I grew up hearing the songs dedicated to King Hussein and dancing to them. I remember seeing her on Larry king live when I was in 9. This book was very sentimental to me. I nearly cried when I read his mentioning of her in his last letter. She also shed gave me thorough understanding of the palistinian Israeli conflict. I nearly cried at the end when I finished the book. Worth the read for sure and I’ll always keep the book.❤️❤️❤️

Wish everyone would read Queen Noor's book. So much of what we have been told even by own government has been untrue, and harmful to Jordan, and undeserving for all that King Hussein did and tried to do to avoid the Iraq war. My eyes were opened and I admire her for her strength, perseverance, and power as a good human being.

This book is definitely a very good read. Of course it's a love story, a bit of a privileged life, and often quite serious, BUT it makes clear the issues in the Middle East. So important to understand. Of all the books I've read, and there are many, this one fits in the "Important" category. It should be a best seller. I highly recommend it.

I am always asking, "what did the author edit?" She wants her husband and her adopted country to look the best in this book. Since the book has ended, she spends most of her time in England.....Times and politics change, so Queen Noor is not in favor as she was once.The memoirs were well written, but a timeline of events and a map would have helped me understand the region and the events of which she was writing.

I bought this book as part of my quest to learn more about Jordan after a recent visit there but only read it after my second visit to that country.I had already read Avi Shlaim's Lion of Jordan (Lion of Jordan: The Life of King Hussein in War and Peace (Vintage)) and King Abdullah II's book (Our Last Best Chance: The Pursuit of Peace in a Time of Peril), so was not looking for an historical account, but for something more personal. Queen Noor's book is certainly a personal account, with enough historical context. Her love for her husband and her adopted country are both obvious and her writing gives some personal insights while maintaining the privacy of the royal family of Jordan and that of her own family.It is an easy book to read and will provide another perspective from which to view Arabs, Muslims and the Middle East - something which is greatly needed.

Somewhat of a misnomer. Only a few pages are about the Queen.Most of it is a hagiography of King Hussein. If pitched as such, I'd buy a lot more.

Queen Noor is inspiring. The book (because it is so interesting) leaves the reader wanting to know more about her, the Royal family, Jordan, and the Middle East. However, Queen Noor is easily the most fascinating figure in this story and I'm so glad she wrote her story now, not later as she contemplated. After reading the entire book, the only criticism I had was that she compared the American GOVERNMENT'S views with European CITIZENS' views (concluding that Americans are more narrow minded about the situation with Israel). My reaction was that she should compare governments with governments and people with people. Although our government is pro-Israel to an extreme, I think most of the general citizens believe our government should be neutral (just as the European citizens believe). However, we never have any political candidates who stand on that platform. Anyway, I'm sure it was an unintentional mis-comparison and though it struck a nerve, this was a good read. The reviewers who say she does not open up enough (in my view) miss the point of her reserved character, the Muslim honor and privacy belief system, and Noor's dignity. For goodness sake, she even said she almost never held hands with her husband in public. Why would she disgrace her family honor now by publishing a tell-all book? Instead, she showed her intelligence, but also her respect for her husband, family, and country. I agree her politics are slanted to her view (and to her country's view) but face it, it's her book.

I found Truth in this book that was never shared about King Hussein and the efforts to lead to lasting peace in that region. Things shared in this book were kept from us by the US Govt. and the US News reports about the Israeli aggression and blocking a lasting peace with the behind the scenes collaborations between the US and Israel. King Hussein was a man much like Ghandi and other modern day saints. His efforts for peace were always obstructed by Israels refusal to completely return to only the land given them in the 1948 aggreement establishing the nation of Israel which was done unfairly for the Palestinians. We only have our US Govt. and the Israeli Govt. for the hatred of the Jews and the rise of terrorism in the world. All they wanted was an equal distribution of the land and the Palestinians right to independence as a nation. You can easily deduct this from reading this book for yourself. Before WWI the US kept out of world politics. Since then our involement has created many Problems for us at home and abroad, a huge war machine and many of our men and women dying for what?We have plenty of injustices in our own country to resolve instead of undermining stituations elsewhere in the world! Queen Noor,thank you for writing your account of your husbands peace efforts!

I purchased this textbook to use with a MOOC as recommended reading. Textbooks are more difficult to read than fiction or most types of non-fiction, this book is no different. While it is chock full of info, it is a drudge to get through. Better used as a reference book than casual reading.

This text is a brilliant overview of archaeology, including excavation methods, dating techniques, the development of archaeology and much much more. A must for those interested in archaeology, those beginning their study in archaeology, and even for amateur archaeologists. Well written and thought provoking, this is so much better than those dry dusty old text books. I read the whole thing right through, and enjoyed it thoroughly.
