The Annotated Big Sleep, by Raymond Chandler Owen Hill

Review

The enduring 1939 tale of blackmail and corruption introduced readers to private detective Philip Marlowe and remains one of the most influential novels in American literature, inspiring countless books and films. The publisher has enlisted three editors to provide notes--a poet/novelist/bookseller, an English professor, and a librarian/scholar--and the result is a thorough, interdisciplinary approach that enriches and informs the text.  Patrick Millikin,Publishers Weekly

About the Author

RAYMOND CHANDLER (1888-1959) turned to writing fiction at the age of forty-five, after a career as an oil executive. He published his first story in Black Mask in 1933, and his first novel, The Big Sleep, in 1939. Over his lifetime, Chandler wrote seven novels, several screenplays, and numerous short stories, and became the master practitioner of American hard-boiled crime fiction. OWEN HILL is the author of two mystery novels, a book of short fiction, and several books of poetry. He has reviewed crime novels for the Los Angeles Times and the East Bay Express. In 2005 he was awarded the Howard Moss residency for poetry at Yaddo. One of the essential reprints of 2018. The annotations are nearly as thrilling as Chandler's prose.

I thoroughly enjoyed this in-depth analysis of _The Big Sleep_. The notes dissect the themes, imagery, and background of Chandler's most famous novel. Additionally, it reveals Chandler's strategy of "cannibalizing" scenes from previously published stories to build TBS. As an added bonus, the notes compare and contrast the novel with the film.As the book's cover blurb recommends, if you haven't read TBS, you can read through without the notes. If you have read it, the notes will deepen your appreciation and understanding of the story.Reading this w/the annotations was pure pleasure.

I've read TBS previously in three different editions. The wonderful annotations make this edition the best. They put the reader in the 1930'3 LA scene of corruption with sharp observations that compliment Chandler's incomparable hard-boiled prose. However, the best line in the book - indeed, the best line in all of hard-boiled literature - doesn't get a comment. Here's the line: "Dead men are heavier than broken hearts." Critics generally find that the hard-boiled manner in telling a story began with Hemingway and Hammett. This edition makes plain that such a method started right here with The Big Sleep.

Excellent addition to my library. I will chew on it slowly, and enjoy it. Could I have some more please! Thank you. "The General spoke again, slowly using his strength as carefully as an out-of-work showgirl uses her last good pair of stockings."

If you love Raymond Chandler and have read everything, both fiction and non-fiction, that is available, biographies, letters, everything, and have reconciled yourself to the failures of all those would-be Marlowe updaters to hit the mark ("New! A Philip Marlowe novel by the latest bandwagon rider!") (let's face it, Chandler died and he's not coming back) then this annotated edition is a gold mine. Each note is as tasty as the prose it illuminates and the only criticism is, why stop now? You've got more to do, people. Get on to the rest of the canon. The only negative is, the book ended and I wanted to stay immersed in a world that no longer lives except in our imaginations. (But then, that's all the worlds we think we inhabit, isn't it?)

I've read THE BIG SLEEP three or four times already, of course, but reading it this way -- with notes and supplemental materials on the right-hand page facing the text on the left-hand page -- made it feel so fresh it was almost new to me. If you love American crime fiction, you will never have more fun reading it than with this annotated version of THE BIG SLEEP. It's utterly mesmerizing stuff.

If you are a Chandler fan (and I am) then this Annotated version of "The Big Sleep" is a must read.I read it slowly over a month to savor it. I have read the book several times and seen the movie version with Humphrey Bogart probably 20 times. The annotations are drawn from the author's own letters, essays, and of course his other works, in particular the short stories that he cannibalized (Killer in the Rain, The Curtain) to form the novel, The Big Sleep. Comparisons to other authors such as Dashiell Hammett, Ross MacDonald, Robert B Parker, James Cain, Conan Doyle, etc as well as Romantic Poets (Chandler was educated in England and loved the Romantic Poets and playwrights hence the name Marlowe for his famous detective), and non-fiction works like "The Hero of a Thousand Faces" by Joseph Campbell. We also get a comparison to historical Los Angeles and environs in the early to mid 20th century to get a full understanding of the time and place where the story takes place. It contains maps, newspaper articles, and pictures.

This is the book you need if you want to immerse yourself in the quintessential nor city of the 40s and 50s. And of course I do. I was there in the 40s, the 50s, and as an adult in the mid 60s. It's all gone now, but I remember.

Amazon.com Review

You'd think there wouldn't be much left to say about a living icon like Muhammad Ali, yet David Remnick imbues King of the World with all the freshness and vitality this legendary fighter displayed in his prime. Beginning with the pre-Ali days of boxing and its two archetypes, Floyd Patterson (the good black heavyweight) and Sonny Liston (the bad black heavyweight), Remnick deftly sets the stage for the emergence of a heavyweight champion the likes of which the world had never seen: a three-dimensional, Technicolor showman, fighter and minister of Islam, a man who talked almost as well as he fought. But mostly Remnick's portrait is of a man who could not be confined to any existing stereotypes, inside the ring or out. In extraordinary detail, Remnick depicts Ali as a creation of his own imagination as we follow the willful and mercurial young Cassius Clay from his boyhood and watch him hone and shape himself to a figure who would eventually command center stage in one of the most volatile decades in our history. To Remnick it seems clear that Ali's greatest accomplishment is to prove beyond a doubt that not only is it possible to challenge the implacable forces of the establishment (the noir-ish, gangster-ridden fight game and the ethos of a whole country) but, with the right combination of conviction and talent, to triumph over these forces. --Fred Haefele

From Publishers Weekly

"I ain't got no quarrel with them Vietcong," Ali said in 1967 on refusing to be drafted. He was sentenced to five years in prison, and though the Supreme Court would overturn his conviction four years later, principle lost himAtemporarilyAhis title, big bucks, the support of many admirers and the best years of his fighting life. Vietnam postdates most of New Yorker editor Remnick's (Lenin's Tomb) coverage, as he writes little about Ali in the post-Sonny Liston era. At its best, the book recalls the boxing writings of A.J. Liebling, while Remnick's frequent use of Ali's hilarious "rapper" doggerel adds to the melancholy humor through which he describes the Louisville kid who beat gambling odds on the way to the heavyweight title but couldn't beat the medical odds. "The history of [prize] fighters," Remnick writes, "is the history of men who end up damaged." Only in his middle 50s, the once graceful Ali, last seen worldwide clutching the Atlanta Olympic torch in a trembling hand, is disabled by degenerative Parkinson's disease. To many, though, he was disabled even earlier by his conversion to Elijah Muhammad's Nation of Islam, which, whatever its controversial separatist image, "orders [Ali's] life and helps him cope with his illness," according to Remnick. The author smartly records Ali's defiant besting of adversaries in and out of the ring and shows him to be a champion human being. 16 pages of b&w photos. This book was a gift for my daughter. She loved it. Over and over she shared bits of information she'd learned from this book at the dinner table such as "Muhammad Ali opposed war." Or "Did you know Muhammad Ali went to prison for his beliefs?"This would likely be an excellent book for any teen, adult, or maybe even a middle-school child who is an accelerated reader.

I am not a personal fan of boxing. However, since I have lived in Louisville, KY, the city has embraced one of their own...Cassius Clay Jr. i.e. Muhammad Ali. I became friends with someone who went to high school with Cassius and was one of his best friends. So, I had to read this book and I learned so much about this gifted man. I believe anyone who reads this book will enjoy it and come away with a better understanding of this incredible man!

This book captures the context in which Ali first gained notoriety. It clearly describes how Ali broke the mold relative to sports figures by contrasting his style both in and out of the ring to that of his immediate predecessors Sonny Liston and Floyd Patterson. Ali was "THE GREATEST" in many ways. His influence on not only his own sport but on the entire culture is evident throughout this well documented and entertaining book. It is remarkable how much has changed in 35 years. Remnick brings many of the events of the early 60's clearly into focus. I found it fascinating to think about the proximity in time of such events as the Kennedy assassination, the Clay-Liston fight, and the Beatles invasion. Not that any of these things are necessarily related, but it WAS an amazing time. The writing here is crisp and the numerous quotes from eyewitnesses enhance the narrative. Well worth the time.

The Titans Reigned SupremeFantastic book - more than just the Ali Story -This is one of the best-written and thought out books of the happenings amongst a small circle of the greatest heavy weights. You get a rare insight into the lives and minds of Floyd Patterson, Sonny Liston and Cassius Clay - and the awakening/becoming of Muhammad AliI went into this book wanting to feed my hunger for knowledge of Muhammad Ali and came out of with a craving for more Sonny Liston - I now want to know all I can about him.Only a brief period in time is covered - but it's an in-depth look at that time and the people and the places that made up boxing and some of the world outside boxing. This is a great book for anyone interested in these titans - for anyone interested in Patterson, Liston and Ali - for anyone interested in the history of legends. One of the best books I've experienced - I truly felt like I was there at times - in that era - that energy of the people and the timesThis is one of those books where you wish there was a part 2

The story of Cassius Clay. From the Rome Olympics to the stunning defeat of Sonny Liston. Very detailed telling of the life and the boxing ring.

Absolutely the best book about Ali. I am a long time fight fan, and this book talks about the fight game back in the early 60's when Patterson and Liston were the champs, but upstart Cassius Clay (Ali) was beginning to change the world, starting with boxing. Of course the coverage of Ali is wonderful, but the discussion of the other two is also very intimately done. Great Book.

Absoloutely fabulous. Having been born in the late 60's I can only imagine what it was like for Ali. While reading this book it was as if I was there. Remnick has chosen a delicious topic that left me hungry for more. Brilliantly weaving in the civil rights movement with the Heavy Weight title fights, Remnick puts the reader in the middle of the 50's and 60's. In the process he confirms what we already knew in our hearts, Ali is the greatest fighter of all time. But not just for his ability in the ring, but for his stand. His stand for what is right and possible for humanity. Bravo!

The best book I've read on Ali - all encompassing and easy to read.

Who Is Pelé?   In the summer of 1956, Pelé was homesick.   Pelé (say: PEH-lay) had arrived in the city of Santos, Brazil, just weeks earlier. He had grown up in Bauru, a tiny town to the west, but his incredible skills on the soccer field got him noticed by a team called Santos. He was only fifteen, and moving to the city had been a major decision for Pelé.   Without soccer, he might still be shining shoes or working in a field. Most of his friends on his hometown team could never dream of leaving Bauru. Now, on the Santos team, Pelé would earn enough money to support his family. And he could make his dream of becoming a soccer star come true.   At just over five feet tall, Pelé was small for his age. He was an amazing player who could dribble well, and he was very quick. On his new team, though, he was playing against older, larger adults. He was worried he would not succeed. He was also living away from home for the first time. And Santos was a strange place. Then he missed an easy penalty shot during a game that cost his team a victory. He was embarrassed and sad. Pelé had had enough of life in the big city. That’s it, he thought, I’m quitting.   Early in the morning, he packed his bag and tiptoed out of his room. He had just enough money for a bus ticket back to Bauru. But as he walked quietly through the players’ dormitory, he was stopped by a man who worked for the team. Big Sabu helped the players with their gear and watched over the young players. In his many years with Santos, he had seen other teens like Pelé. They were young, scared, and often thought of quitting. So Big Sabu stopped Pelé and told him he could not leave without permission. He wanted to keep Pelé on team Santos. Pelé listened and made an important decision. He headed back to his room. He would keep aiming for his dream.   And it turned out to be the right decision. Pelé had arrived at Santos as a very good player, but that was not enough. Pelé worked hard and soon learned to do more than just dribble. He worked on shooting and passing and being in the right position to help his teammates. He ate more, exercised, and grew stronger and more confident.   In a few months, he was one of the team’s stars, scoring goal after goal. With Pelé’s help, Santos became one of the top teams in the country. When Pelé was only seventeen, he was named to the national team for Brazil and helped his country win its first World Cup championship!   In the years that followed, Pelé became the best, and most famous, soccer player in the world. He helped Brazil win three World Cup titles and scored more than 1,200 goals for his teams and his country. He also traveled to the United States in 1975 and helped the sport of soccer become popular among Americans. As the best player in the world’s favorite sport, Pelé became an ambassador for soccer and a symbol for the sport itself.   Chapter 1: The Boy Who Loved Soccer   Edson Arantes do Nascimento was born on October 23, 1940, in the tiny village of Três Corações (say: TRACE kor-ah-SOYS), Brazil. Even in 1940, there were many parts of the world that did not have electricity. Most of southeastern Brazil was one of those areas. In honor of their village finally getting electricity, Edson’s parents named their first son after the American inventor Thomas Edison.   Edson’s father was named João Ramos but went by the nickname Dondinho. Most Brazilian men are known by a nickname. He was a soccer player for the town’s team. Edson’s mother was named Celeste. Two years later, his mother had another son, Jair. Edson had not yet been nicknamed “Pelé.”    Like all Brazilians, the Nascimento family spoke Portuguese. Brazil had been a colony of Portugal until 1822, when it gained independence. In the 1700s and 1800s, millions of Africans had been brought to Brazil as slaves to work for the Portuguese. The Nascimento family had ancestors among those African people, so Edson had very dark skin.    Dondinho loved playing soccer and hoped that his sons would follow him. But playing professional soccer was not an easy life. In Brazil at this time, every village and town had a team. But only the very top players on the biggest teams earned the best salaries. The smaller teams, like the one in Três Corações and nearby towns, could not pay their players well. And that made life hard for Edson’s family. They lived in a brick house that was nearly falling down in places. And Edson didn’t own a pair of shoes until he was seven years old.   In 1943, Edson’s sister was born. She was named Maria Lúcia.   When Edson was four, Dondinho was asked to play for a team in Bauru, a larger town to the south. He was also promised a second job for when he was not playing soccer. This was good news for the family. On the way to Bauru, Edson was excited to ride a train for the first time. He was thrilled to see the country of Brazil rush by the open window. He nearly fell out of one before being caught by Dondinho!   Life in Bauru was not easy. The family’s house was also very crowded. Edson’s grandmother and his uncle Jorge had also moved to Bauru so the family could stay together. The house had only a small backyard, and it was often muddy. They had no air conditioning in the steamy summers. And they heated the house during the winters with a woodstove, which they also used for cooking. It was Edson’s job to stack the wood that was delivered to the house each week.    Dondinho’s team did not provide the second job it had promised him. And he had injured his knee, which meant he could not play all the time. Sometimes the family struggled just to have enough to eat. Their relatives tried to help them out. Even Edson had to help. He worked as a shoeshine boy at the railroad station. He also sometimes worked at the soccer stadium when Dondinho played. He loved watching his tall, strong father leap above the other teams’ players to knock the ball into the goal with his head.    Every boy in Edson’s neighborhood played soccer. He spent many hours playing with his friends. He was fast, and even though he was small for his age, he was one of the best.   The boys were too poor to buy a ball. So they got an old sock, stuffed it tightly with rags, and tied it up with string. This lumpy ball was kicked all around the streets in their neighborhood. The goalposts might be a pair of old shoes. There were no real fields and very few organized leagues for children.   Edson did have one advantage: his father. Dondinho loved showing his boys all that he knew of the game he loved. They practiced dribbling and passing with the sock ball. He told them about the positions on the field and how to shoot the ball at the goal. He showed his sons how important it was to be able to play well with both feet, and how to control the ball no matter how it came to you. Edson loved this time with his father. The more Edson played, the more he had dreams of being a pro player like Dondinho. “One day,” he told his friends, “I’m going to be as good as my dad.”   About a year after they moved to Bauru, Dondinho finally got his second job. He worked at a government health clinic, sweeping floors and helping the staff. Edson sometimes helped his father at work. Dondinho would use the time to tell Edson stories of his life in soccer. As Edson’s dreams grew bigger, he grew even closer with his father.   Now that the family had enough money, Edson could finally go to school. Poor families in Brazil needed to save money for school fees and supplies before their children could begin classes. His mother and his aunt sewed up his old shorts and made him a nice shirt. He got a box of colored pencils to use in school.    But Edson, the boy who loved playing soccer, did not enjoy school. He did not like sitting still and he did not like doing homework. He often sneaked out to go swimming or to play soccer with his friends. When he was in class, he talked too much. As a punishment, his teacher sometimes stuffed his cheeks with paper! Other times, she made him kneel on hard, dry beans.   When Edson was about nine, the boys he played soccer with started calling him “Pelé.” Most nicknames in Brazil are based on a person’s name, what they look like, or how they act. But no one really knows what Pelé means. “I’ve been back to Bauru many times,” Pelé later wrote, “and have asked all my old friends from those days, but they don’t have a clue how or when it started.”   At first, he hated the nickname. He was even suspended from school for hitting a boy who called him Pelé! But he eventually grew to love the name that he would soon make world famous.

This book is a book of beautiful stories. Stories of life that opens up your heart, your tears, and your joy. I have taken this book to bed with me, wanting the words to take me to sleep, so I can be not only filled with awareness of love and kindness in my conscious mind but so it could move into my dreamworld too. I bought the book without really knowing too much about Shlomo Carlbach, only knowing that he composed music that, now that I have read the book, has been the music that has lifted my spirits again and again. I didnt realise that so many of the tunes in shule and so many from my younger years at Habonim, were actually tunes made by Reb. Shlomo Carlbach. I recently was in Israel, I went to a Friday night service at the House of Love and Prayer in Tsfat, and it was full of dancing and singing overlooking Meron at sunset. What an experience. I didn't realise that those tunes were all his. So moving for all generations. The book although you cant hear it, reads as the music does, taking you to places within yourself that maybe you havent fully discovered or knew you had. lt is really a book about miracles, miracles that we as human beings can really participate in to make the world a better place. This book is one of the most inspiring books I have ever read.

I recommend this book for anyone interested in an account of a modern zaddik—a Jewish holy man. For those who had some contact with Shlomo, it is "not to be missed" account of how truly extraordinary he was. I saw him two times in concert and was very moved. This book helped me to understand just how great and amazing a man he was. Note to the publisher: why don't you reprint this? Obviously there are not enough copies to around, and that discrepancy between supply and demand is inflating the price. Shlomo would have wanted it available to any and all. I hope it gets reprinted soon.

What an inspirational story. A quick read

This book is so good, really wonderful stories a must read! Also includes a great biography of Reb Shlomos life.

Wow. Almost made me feel like I had met the man myself. Full of joy and life, as was he.

This book is beautiful! I'm enjoying it and highly recommend it. Learning about Rabbi Carlebach is truly life changing! Thank you very much to the very talented writer, Yitta Halberstam.

Stories here are incredible. Shows the power of one person to change the world while still staying true to themselves.

amazingly written Halberstam does a phenomenal job!

For sure, this is one of the best books i've read recently. And it deserve the 5 starts, here is some key takeaways:"If you have a big presentation coming up over the next few weeks or months, open a file right now and spend four minutes starting to put down any ideas. Then close the file. No more than four minutes. Just start it."" MIX UP YOUR ROUTINES It’s true that doing the same things at the same time, day after day, can get boring. To avoid this kind of routine fatigue, there’s no reason why you can’t have different routines for different days of the week. Jack Dorsey, the cofounder of Twitter and founder of Square, has an interesting approach to his weekly routine. He has divided up his week into themes. Monday is for management meetings and “running the company” work. Tuesday is for product development. Wednesday is for marketing, communications, and growth. Thursday is for developers and partnerships. Friday is for the company and its culture.9 This routine helps to provide calmness amid the chaos of a high-growth start-up. It enables him to focus his energy on a single theme each day instead of feeling pulled into everything. He adheres to this routine each week, no exceptions, and over time people learn this about him and can organize meetings and requests around it."“In work, do what you enjoy. In family life, be completely present.”“Mindfulness helps you go home to the present. And every time you go there and recognize a condition of happiness that you have, happiness comes.”"The Prophet Muhammad lived an essential life that included mending his own shoes and clothes and milking his own goat and taught his followers in Islam to do the same."Henry David Thoreau (who wrote, “I do believe in simplicity. It is astonishing as well as sad, how many trivial affairs even the wisest thinks he must attend to in a day; … so simplify the problem of life, distinguish the necessary and the real”)."While other people are padding their résumés and building out their LinkedIn profiles, you will be building a career of meaning.""The life of an Essentialist is a life lived without regret. If you have correctly identified what really matters, if you invest your time and energy in it, then it is difficult to regret the choices you make. You become proud of the life you have chosen to live.""If you take one thing away from this book, I hope you will remember this: whatever decision or challenge or crossroads you face in your life, simply ask yourself, “What is essential?” Eliminate everything else."

This book came out in April this year. It is already a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller. Why? It deals with the most serious problem business people face. These 24-hour days just do not work!Technology was supposed to make our working lives easier, and our workdays shorter. Two decades later, we are still waiting for promised spare time.Author Greg McKeown describes a seminal experience that led him to a profound conclusion. He was in the maternity ward with his wife and newborn child. A colleague called and asked whether he planned to attend the meeting scheduled at that time, and he said yes. “To my shame, while my wife lay in hospital with our hours-old baby, I went to the meeting.” His colleague mention that the client would respect him for making the decision to be there, but the look on the client’s face showed little respect. “I had hurt my family, my integrity, and even the client relationship.”(What is your story? Pause and recall one. It will make the solution this book offers so much more meaningful.)The important lesson McKeown discovered from this experience was that if you do not prioritise your life, someone else will. Many forces make this prioritization no easy matter for even intelligent, thoughtful, and capable people. The result is the remaining in the “death grip of the non-essentials.” One of the reasons for this is that our society punishes the good behaviour (saying no,) and rewards the bad behaviour (saying yes.)At a more subtle level, there are two reason mentioned in the book that stood out for me. The first is that the success often distracts us from focusing on the essentials that were the reason for the success in the first place. The second is that we have so much choice that it overwhelms our ability to manage it. Psychologist point out that a glut of choices causes “decision fatigue” which reduces the quality of the decision we do make. When the word “priority, ” first entered the English language in 1400s it was in the singular. Today, it has a plural form allowing people to talk of their top ten priorities! This is part of the reason we entertain the myth that you can have it all, you can have ten top priorities. With ten priorities, it is not surprising that we lose sight of everything that is meaningful and important, in business and our private lives. We need to separate the essential from the non-essential only because we cannot meet all our commitments to work, friends, family, social causes, and the rest. The time required simply is unavailable. There are only 24 hours each day. That is it.The basic proposition of Essentialism is that “only once you give yourself permission to stop trying to do it all, to stop saying yes to everyone, can you make your highest contribution towards the things that really matter.” Essentialism is not simply a matter of saying “no” more often, or honing your time management skills. Rather, it is asking, “What is the most important thing I should be doing now?” It is all about how to get the right things done.Mckeown captures the method he presents for becoming an Essentialist in the “wardrobe” metaphor.Your wardrobe is cluttered and disorganized. You have difficulty finding clothes, and have no place for new ones. The Essentialist would address this problem in three parts. The first is to “Explore and Evaluate." Rather than considering whether you might ever wear garment again in the future, ask more focused and stronger question: “Do I love this?” and “Do I look great in it?” and “Do I wear this often?” If the answer to this question is negative, put the garment into the black bag for delivery to a charity. In your personal or professional life this question would be “Will this activity or effort make the highest possible contribution towards my goal?” As you work through this book, you will clarify what your goal is in the various aspects of your life. The next step in wardrobe management is the “Eliminate” step. This is the step that prevents you having 10 top priorities or in term of the metaphor having a “probably should get rid of” pile. If you are not ready to put this pile into the black bag, you could ask this question: “If I didn’t already own this, how much would I spend to buy it?” The business equivalent is “If I didn’t have this opportunity, what would I be willing to do to acquire it?”The Eliminate step is a critical part of the value of this book, with the most value coming from the methods. McKeown describes how to rid yourself of the non-essentials in a way that earns you respect from colleagues, management, and clients. The third step in wardrobe management is to “Execute.” To do this, you need to decide on a charity that will be the recipient of the clothing, what time they are open, and to schedule that into your diary. Without the plan to see this through, they will return to your wardrobe, sooner or later. There is a discipline required to be an essentialist, and some courage. Your work-life is not like a wardrobe. In your work-life, the clothes get out the black bag and back into your wardrobe without you doing anything. A schedule you set can be scuttled within 20 minutes of your arriving at the office. Even being able to say “no” well, requires courage.Learning how to do less is the only way to get the maximum return on every irreplaceable moment of your life. Stephen Covey, clearly an Essentialist, put it this way: “The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.”Readability Light -+--- SeriousInsights High +---- LowPractical High +---- Low*Ian Mann of Gateways consults internationally on leadership and strategy and is the author of Strategy that Works.

While i like the idea of "helping myself", self-help books have always turned me off. Books i've read seem self indulgent, with the author telling you how awesome they are, all these amazing people they've helped, and how once they share their secret with you everything is going to change, blah blah blah.maybe it just happened to find me at the right time in my own journey, but i loved this book. It talks in a very clear and straightforward manner about how to simplify your life, your thinking, and your purpose to cut out all the extraneous "stuff" that continually distracts us and focus in on what's really important. People and things (like email!) continual to swirl around us, competing for our attention. When we let them have our attention without being thoughtful, they fill up your life instead of YOU filling up your life and deciding for yourself what your priorities are. It also makes the very commonsense point that when we have 15 different priorities, we have no priorities!Read this book. I felt like it was a great use of time, it had a lot of important things to say, and it was concise in how it said it.

This book picks up after the end of “A Queen’s Spy.” The characters we came to know in the first book are also a large part of this book. Jack believes his brother is dead and starts the story at a bit of a loss as to what he should do next. Mary is Queen of England, making the country once again a Catholic nation. Her sister Elizabeth, a Protestant, is still next in line for the throne unless Mary can provide her husband Phillip of Spain with a child. It is not a comfortable time in England for Protestants, and there are numerous plots on how to return the country to being a Protestant nation. Jack, now knowing that he is the son of William Fitzwarren, and having proof of this fact goes to see a lawyer in an attempt to find a way to restore what should have been rightfully his. Unfortunately, things don’t go quite as planned and he finds himself imprisoned in Marshalsea. In order to be released, he must pay the falsified debt that it is claimed he owes. Unable to do this, he is stuck in a cold dark cell, without food or water, and left there to die.Add to this a plot to take Elizabeth from England (even though she has no desire to leave England) to keep her safe in another country while the men behind the plot seek to find a way to replace Mary & restore Protestantism to England, and this is a long and complicated tale. This was an amazingly intricate historical fiction story set in Tudor England. The author managed to weave a fantastic tale with a great deal of historical knowledge detailed within, yet it doesn’t feel like you are reading a history texbook. The characters feel quite alive and vibrant. The pace is perfect given how much story needed to be told here. This book, like the previous one is a lengthy one, though it moves right along without either dragging or feeling rushed. I would recommend reading the first book in the series if you haven’t yet before starting this one, but if you enjoy historical fiction or books set in Tudor England, I highly recommend reading this one. I truly enjoyed it and I believe you will too.

A Queen's Traitor (The Tudor Mystery Trials #2) by Samantha BurnellAs I started the book, not knowing this was the second installment, I was lost. It felt that I had missed something. This is my biggest complaint about books that are part of a series but do not stand alone.I tried hard to get into the main characters: The brothers Robert, John (Jack), and Richard Fitzwarren but never could. The characters never felt real and I never cared for any of them. They are set in Elizabethan England, written in the British English -- thus complaints of misspelling by a few reviewers--at the time that Mary has succeeded Edward VI, son of Henry VIII. She's Catholic and married to Phillip of Spain. Elderly, Mary is pregnant and must secure the succession if Catholicism is to survive in England. Elizabeth is Protestant, so the Protestant factions, to which Richard Fitzwarren has sworn allegiance, must protect Elizabeth. The book has no ending, since it's a set up for the third installment. I was never engaged. The narrative is poor -- there is an attempt to use the third person point of view which fails miserably. I finished it, only because I like to read.I would not recommend this book.

Two brothers, whose family is trying to kill, whose political involvement with Princess Elizabeth puts them in danger from both her supporters and the government of her sister, Queen Mary, try to learn how to work together, having been raised apart in completely different circumstances. It doesn't help that they both have the family prickly pride and quick temper.

In writing, I love all things adventure, from sword fights and political plots to exhilarating excursions through vast wildness. Ancient, medieval , or renaissance—which is when this story takes place—if the writing is clear, the action is fast and the setting well described, then I'm all in. All of those things were at play in this tale. Like the first book, this was full of court politics and nasty duels, and the tension started in just the first few pages, with a gripping scene between Jack and Dan. What's more to say? I'm off to look for more.

The country awaits the birth of Mary and Charles’ baby; Jack and Richard Fitzwarren, still suffering from their father’s having disinherited them long before, leaving brother Robert as his named heir. Richard conspires to help Elizabeth, while Jack, thinking Richard dead, despairs of ever making a successful way in the world. Protestant conspirators plan to kidnap Elizabeth and use her to challenge Mary’s rule, but Richard and Elizabeth, friends since childhood, know that the results of that plot will create more problems for Elizabeth and for the country than could be solved peacefully. There are clearly realized characters, a plot wrapping tightly around historical records, and wonderfully written scenes to enjoy.

The author writes well and I have no complaint about the book. It just wasn't my cup of tea. The story is relatively well developed and I felt lukewarm about reading it. I think the author deserves credit for his work, and also deserves readers who get excited about this genre.

This is second of the series and I anxiously await the next. I am enjoying Sam Burnell's writing and characters. I turned to this author after reading Bernard Cornwell's Grail series, having enjoyed the time period. This book takes place about 200 years following the last Grail series. Cornwell's books were more about continuing battles, but Burnell's seem to concentrate more on political intrigue, along with the Catholic v Protestant fight for the heart of England. Love the characters, even with all their flaws, which makes them seem so real and plenty of sword play to keep us entertained.

I am thoroughly enjoying Jack and Richard. Lizbet is a welcome addition.I can't wait for number 3!This kindle edition does need a bit more proof reading.

Extremely helpful to read and look at to cross check ideas of proofs. It is also quite useful for ensuring that when you do get stuck, that you do not end up spending a month searching endlessly online for the solution to one difficult problem that might not be consistent. It is an amazing tool to have alongside Baby Rudin and I do hope that you write more solution guides to other commonly referred to texts out there. You are doing God's work by writing these. I have no doubt that this solution guide will be of great use to others. My one suggestion however, is to include a "tips" section in which a student can refer to get a new idea without seeing the full solution.Onto quality of the book. It is well made. Appears to be that this book has only been published for a few months. Considering that my copy of the book was made literally the day before I received it (I know because of the stamp "Made in the USA on April 29th". The quality of the book is superb, and is much better than other book publishing companies out there.

Whether or not you've been in a class with "Baby Rudin" as your text, any graduate or career mathematician likely has faced a question or two that still itches at the back of the mind, a question still waiting for that satisfying solution, still wondering if there's an easier way to tackle that one hard one that was on your final, still wondering if the Differentail Forms and the Lebesgue Theory sections are worth tackling (the respective answers are "probably" and "no," respectively). All of this and more can be found just by perusing A Complete Solution Guide, which delivers as advertised in the same sense Nolan Ryan delivered strikes. This is easily my favorite self-published math text of recent times, and this includes the recent English re-release of the long lost first half of Cartan's Differential Forms text (the second half of which is infamously still printed by Dover). The thoroughness is worth the price of admission alone. There are two complaints that I have that are not specific to the text of his book: first, a minor one, is that the text of the problems are not included with the number. I can see the need for this, specifically if the author is respecting the text, but this makes problems difficult to reference, especially with the addition of adjunct theorems, etc. placed by the author in the solutions. Having at least some kind of marker between solutions - especially in the last chapters - would help the reader stay in line with the part of the text intended. Authors like Shakarchi penned in the questions themselves with his solution guides to Lang's older Linear Algebra, Real Analysis and Complex Analysis texts, and doing so did not compromise the integrity of the original text in any way as far as I know, though copyright law may say otherwise.Lastly, some of the problems may have answers that run on too long. I use the word "may" as a qualifier for several reasons: first, I do not want to embarrass myself by giving an example of how to do one shorter in a public space, of course, and second, just because one can do a problem shorter doesn't mean that it is the thorough answer another reader may crave (or that the text deserves).Grammar aside, I can talk about the errors made by the author so far: they are few and far between, and having gone through (admittedly lightly at the time of this review) the first seven chapters, I have not found anything that is glaringly misleading. It may make you work - but even in an answer key, Rudin is like that.As an aside, the author is responsive and appreciates any feedback, including and ESPECIALLY criticism. I had the pleasure of contacting him just prior to my summer vacation and expressed to him my hopes to see "Mama and Papa Rudin" keyed at long last as well; I am stumbling with self-doubt with whether to help contribute to any direction he wishes to take on these, but nevertheless, I hope for future installments!

Solutions are not elegant, threadbare explanations, not very good. Roger Cooke of Univ of Vermont has complete free solutions on the web if you Google search. His solutions are very high quality.

It's a nice supplementary material, but it is RIFE with errors. Some of them are gaping holes, and some are minor. This book is more expository than the official Rudin solutions hosted by UW Madison, but are a bit less reliable due to said errors.

I believe this is the best solution book or materials for Rudin’s PMA I’ve even seen. Firstly, the book is not only rigorous and concise, but also well written and easy to learn and study from. Secondly, proofs are very detailed for all of the problems in PMA. They are excellent and I think you would definitely be aided in the understanding of the theorems and theories of PMA by this guide. Thirdly, the style of the book is good looking and there are many figures to explain some important or nontrivial concepts. If you have spent much time on searching Rudin’s solutions on web, I would suggest you can stop now and save your time from purchasing this book immediately. I think you won’t be disappointed with it!

Very helpful to me. I've tried to solve first by myself some of the harder questions. The solutions I checked have always been detailed, insightful and helpful. I hope the author will publish a solution book to "Real and Complex Analysis" soon.

I'm starting my next degree and will use "Baby Rudin" for the next class. This accompanying text will be a fine complement to understanding Rudin's text. Looking forward to using it!
