When I think of Shawn I think of a great athlete with a bubbly personality and a big smile. As a gymnastics fan I would've liked to read more on her dealings with other athletes, coaches, us gymnastic staff, travels, etc. I realize she was still competing while she worked on this book so maybe that played a factor. She did share some stories of her adventure in Beijing and they were fun tales.I did find the 2nd half of the book (post Olympics) surprising and honest, a lot of highs and lows for a young woman. Although I think she is probably 15-20 years too young to write a memoir on life lessons this is a decent book for a 20 year old athlete and is a fairly entertaining read.

I have always been a huge fan of Shawn Johnson even before all her fame from the Olympics. I follow gymnastics pretty heavily since I am a former gymnast/diver and she has always been one of my favorite gymnasts to watch. When I heard she had an autobiography about her coming out I had to get it. This book did not disappoint, it was interesting to hear about what she thought about the Olympics and post Olympics and training and just really about her life outside of gymnastics. I recommend to anyone who likes Shawn Johnson and wants to know more about her rather than just her Olympic gymnastics career. It also sends a lot of positive vibes for people to overcome difficulties in their lives.

Because my daughter is a competitive gymnast, I knew this was a book we'd have to own as soon as I discovered it. Our family remembers well rooting for Shawn in the 2008 gymnastics. Watching her smile and intensity. The way she sparkled as she competed.When I handed my daughter this book, I was curious whether it would resonate with her or be one she started and then put down. The pages flipped pretty fast as she learned more about Shawn and her journey. The book pairs her journey with her spiritual journey. It's told in a way that perfectly targets teens. The style is conversational taking you behind the scenes in the events in her life. Each chapter also ends with a Lesson I've Learned: a nugget of truth that applies to all of us.This is a sports memoir with spiritual applications. A worthwhile read, and one I look forward to reading with my daughter next time.

Shawn's story is an inspiring journey for anyone. Very few realize how hard girls train to become an Olympic gymnast, and how coveted those spots on the team really are. The highlight for me is reading about the aftermath of being an Olympic medalist and figuring out what to do next... and these girls are so young to be faced with such big life choices. I mean, how many of us fulfill our life's dream by the age of 16 and are faced with what to do next? Shawn has made the transition beautifully and has embraced the Lord and her family and friends to lift her during the tough times. We can all learn something special from this spunky yet eloquent young lady who won our hearts in Beijing with her performance, and her sportsmanship... Truly a Golden Flower!

I found this book interesting and easy to read. It was a good book overall. I have always liked watching gymnastics, although it makes me nervous. I wasn't very familiar with Shawn Johnson because I didn't see much of the Olympics the year she was there. I knew of her, and was curious to know her story. My daughter recently started taking gymnastics classes and I happened to come across this book. I wasn't sure if I'd like it, but it was a good read. I would recommend it to people who are curious about the world of gymnastics, or who are fans of this gymnast.

Shawn, though young, has packed a whole lifetime of wisdom into this book. She has been through some tough things and worked hard. I loved seeing her win on "Dancing with the Stars" and enjoyed reading how that came to be. She has a "what I've learned" box for every chapter and she seems to have remained remarkably unscathed from being in the public limelight. She also gave good insight into what it takes to be a winner--ATTITUDE is a great deal of it! Her parents provided a rock for her to balance on in her career--well done!

I was so pleased with my purchase because of it's price, amount of time that it arrived with another of my purchases which was nice because I only had to expect one package. The condition of the book was good as was described. I'd recommend this book to anyone like me who loves ballet, figure skating, or gymnastics and as a figure skater myself I learn from both ballet and gymnastics for grace, flexablity, and much more and what better what to learn than to read a biography of a successful athlete.

I read this first to see if it's appropriate for my tweenish daughter, a gymnastic fan, and I feel it is. It is NOT primarily a memoir of her gymnastics training, experiences, or career, so if you are looking for that, this isn't it. She does of course talk about it, but it doesn't provide a lot of details on the training or moves itself. Her emphasis is her personal journey to date, and the second half is all post-Olympics, talking about her Dancing With The Stars experience, and her personal struggles to make sense of her life post-gymnastics. She talks a lot about her Christian faith in this part of the book, but I didn't feel it was proselytizing or judgmental. She is young, so it does seem immature compared to most memoirs- but most memoirs aren't written when someone is 20! For the short life she has had, she has done a lot, and she has a great optimism and heart to her. So if you are a fan, and/or a young girl or woman, you will probably really appreciate this book.

I met Joe Bageant, the gonzo journalist turned author at a book reading and signing event put on by the Writer's League of Texas and Barnes & Noble in the very blue city of Austin Texas. I found the man part avenging angel, part commie-liberal-provocateur, but a man with honesty and insight. And that's before I read the book. I must admit, I'm one of those liberals who have had a hard time understanding the appeal of NASCAR and sixers of Bud Lite, preferring a Prius over a GM Sierra, Target instead of Wal-Mart, (Joe calls it Junk-Mart), and accepting that white working class America votes Republican.Of course, I bought his book, read it in one sitting, and loved his colorful and hilarious writing style. This book will be my Christmas present to my Liberal friends and relatives who, like me, just don't get it."Deer Hunting with Jesus - Dispatches from America's Class War" sheds light on why Joe's people, the underpaid, undereducated, anti-union, overworked have-nots, the deep-fried, double-wide, git `er done, church-going, gun-owning, heartland Americans he grew up with, have become George Bush's base. I was amongst the depressed liberal masses who couldn't believe George and Company took the 2004 election. Four more years. What was that all about? I never knew, until I read this book.Joe returned to his redneck roots of Winchester, Virginia, after being gone 30 years. He came back not as an outsider, but as an embedded reporter, to clarify his understanding of the attraction the working class, he calls it the permanent underclass, has with the GOP. They see the erosion of their traditions and values, and blame it not on the raping and pillaging self interested Republicans, but on the Liberals. Getting most of their information from right wing talk radio and Fox News, the working class who would never accept a handout themselves, mistrust the Dems who give handouts and welfare. Even Social Security is suspect. "In the redneck mind, lazy is the worst thing a person can be," says Joe. There is deep anger and fear there, and the GOP has tapped into it. Democrats ignore it. The middle class cannot see the working class.Joe rants a bit, but that's OK. As one of the "brie-eating, microbrew-sucking, Volvo-driving wimps" (read Liberals), I appreciate the insight into what he reports from the trenches. He interviews real people at the bars, restaurants, hospitals and businesses of the town. There is a class divide in this country, defined by money. And education. And the neo-cons understand the real secret; that education has a liberalizing effect on people. Think about it.Don't ignore this book.

If you're one of those people who were surprised by the election of Donald Trump, you owe it to yourself to read this book. Bageant, a Vietnam vet, left Winchester, VA, to explore the West and lead a hippie-ish life, but he returned 30 years later and took a long and compassionate look at the folks he left behind. He had been both a union organizer and a journalist, but he never lost touch with his Scots-Irish, gun-owning roots. Much of the research for this book was done in the waning days of the last Bush administration, and it misses the advent of cell phones and their dependent media as well as the surge in gun ownership fueled by the election of a black president, but Bageant made his living off the Internet in the end, and his last chapter about the influence of reality TV is chilling.One aspect of rural poverty rarely mentioned is its uneven consequences on women. Bageant interviews several, among them a 300-pound lounge singer on oxygen who can't get onto disability and an old girl friend who works for terrible wages and covers her car with those yellow ribbons that she believes (wrongly) "support the troops." His own mother is in a nursing home with deplorable conditions. One woman tells him that the home's director collects fees for "visiting" her own mother as he passes through the dining room, but there are few alternatives.Bageant died in 2011, in Mexico, I assume it had something to do with not wanting to be treated for cancer in his hometown, but he left quite a legacy. This book was recommended to me when I finished Hill Billy Elegy, and I think it's a better analysis of the situation. Don't skip it.

Bageanant acknowledges he “sprang” from the bottom third of America which constitutes the unacknowledged working-class, the conservative, politically misinformed or oblivious and patriotic to their own detriment- the rednecks, the white trash, the Scots Irish, etc. He says alcohol, Jesus, and overeating are the three preferred avenues of escape. (He forgot tobacco products, which are a lucrative commodity for each state, and tattoos.) Living in a lower economic class town, I see his vision every day. And, the more flags you see in a neighborhood, the more redneck it is. When you see the Confederate flags, it is time to keep you opinions to yourself. The author has little good to say about the Rotary and service clubs, the chambers of commerce and Those Who Rule Over Us in general, but he nails down the plight of the working poor, and their skewed logic to a T. The service clubs and chambers he viewed as enforcement of the status quo. One of Rubbermaid’s factories is a major, albeit low paying employer in his community, but, after Wal-Mart worked the corporation over, wages fell and many such factories were closed, sent to foreign lands. You see it there. I see it in my little town. This is nothing new. Just down the road from me, Carrier jobs are at stake. The top union job pays only $17.00 and hour; the company makes money, but other countries offer cheaper production. All the STEM training our schools offer is meaningless when the jobs vanish. Workers in his/my hometown spend a huge percentage of their earnings on housing and are about one paycheck away from homelessness. Still, just as in the Hoosier state where 70% of jobs are poverty level, they swallow the Republican line, which Bageant cannot talk any of the residents out of. Politics is, just as in religion, dangerous, where faith trumps logic every time. Bageant asserts the grassroots Republican agenda is repulsive, although when forced down their voters’ throats is swallowed with gusto while the liberals chatter among themselves making little attempt to convert the “heathen.” The heathen, he asserts voted for an armed and “moral” America. Bageant is really mean about the NAFTA paradigm: “The reality is that our economy now consists of driving 250 million vehicles around the suburbs and malls and eating fried chicken. We don’t manufacture much.” (p. 110). The author seems right as rain to me. A house of cards, at least for working folks such as us… The chapter on home/trailer/modular homes, etc. is both informative and disgusting. Joe views predatory “home” lending high on his evil list. On guns, he has to say there are more American gun owners than voters, which costs Democrats huge vote losses. “Without a doubt the left would do much better if it stopped yammering about guns and redirected that energy toward fair wages or health care.” Joe’s brother Mike was a self-taught preacher, pastor to a church of a thousand, who cast out demons. Joe says such Christian fundamentalists make up 25 percent of registered voters. Such congregations are not merely confined to Joe’s neck of the woods, but seem to dot Indiana as well and I am sure this is true in many other states. You will have to read the chapter “The Covert Kingdom” to scare your socks off. Scots-Irish are discussed at length. Joe’s opinions are quite interesting at the very least. Health care for the elderly took a terrific flogging. The effects of television finish off this book. I have given this book a 4 star rather than 5 only because, printed in 2007, it is old. Joe did not realized how far a country could slide to the right in mere nine years. Things change, often not for the better. For instance, the hologram chapter did not discuss the time spent by Americans using hand held electronic devices and that effect upon their conclusions and decisions. Still, the title is a must read! Joe Bagneant (1946-2011) was an American author and columnist who also appeared as a commentator on radio and television and, of course, maintained a website.

Very well written! I found this book to be extremely useful. A part of my job requires in depth knowledge of managing SQL Server and tuning performance. This book was pretty helpful in tuning the server.

This book is required for my SQL Database Admin course at the University of West Florida and is one I will be keeping. The content is laid out nicely and will come in hand for reference for a long time to come. The code snips and examples are top notch, the authors know the subject well.

This book needs editing.. I've seen paragraphs that seemed to be missing a sentence, sentences I could not make heads or tails of (and I've been a DBA on MS SQL Server, Oracle, and Sybase for over a decade), and one example that read, "Following are the three most important pillars..." followed by five bullet points. Heh. That said, it's a reasonably useful overview of MS SQL Server 2014, so if you can look past a flaw now and again, go for it.

In this book Mark Lamster talks about the machinations, secret diplomacy, arrangements and connections of the painter Peter Paul Rubens. His was a whirlwind career, playing out in Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Madrid, Mantua, London and everywhere in between in the service of the Spanish Habsburgs; most often under cover of a painting commission. As a painter he "picture[d] the most powerful men and women of his day, and the institutions they controlled, not necessarily as they were, but as they wished to be seen." Lamster brings Rubens to life - :"tall and physically attractive", with friends and connections everywhere. - yet, I was left not really knowing much more of Rubens than when I started this book. Sometimes I found myself wondering where the many quotes really came from - maybe it was a Kindle edition - but there really were no references. Some were given in the appendix, but not really enough to follow up.

If I described this book as a detailed biography of the great Baroque painter, you might wonder whether it could sustain your interest for a book-length read. But then you might miss this highly entertaining and skillfully written book---not only a master painter, serious scholar, and astute businessman, Rubens was also a diplomat and spy who traveled in the upper echelons of European society and royalty. Against the backdrop of the Spanish Inquisition, the Eighty Years' War, and other historical events filled with intrigue, war, big personalities, and, yes, sex, the author tells a great tale of an extraordinary man in extraordinary times. Deftly written with great humor and care, Master of Shadows is a hard-to-put-down page-turner once you start. If only all "art history" was this much fun; hopefully Lamster will move on to other artists, assuming their stories are as fascinating as this.

Presumably, scholarly readers will find little here to stimulate their interest; the general reader will find this footnote to art and diplomatic history, enlightening and entertaining.The author devotes sufficient space to the political-military conflicts of the various monarchies influential in the fate of the part of the Netherlands to allow us to understand the rationale for Rubens diplomatic endeavors. He provides sufficient art historical knowledge of Rubens Art to allow us to understand the reputation which gave him access to the leading Western European Courts which welcomed him even when his goals were understood by them to be contrary to their own.Shining above the particulars of Art and Diplomacy is the character of a man who, equal to any, typified the values of wise commitment to a Europe, free of the Religious, Political,Economic and Status hostilities which impeded creation of conditions for greater wealth and well-being for all.Well-written and a good story. Easily accessible to the average reader.

My Book Club just read "Master of Shadows" so it was interesting to see the video which was superficially accurate but lacked the depth of the book. Detail was missing but seeing the actual pictures was delightful.

Excellent work! I thought I knew a lot about Milwaukee lgbt history because I've lived 35 years of it, but this book gave me tons of background from before my time and nostalgia for time and places from my past. And the picture of the guy (Jeff) on the cover is amazing.

This is a FANTASTIC book! Milwaukee has a very rich and significant LGBT history, and the author was able to capture the main highlights in print and on film. I think this is the “must have” item for anyone who wants to know more about Milwaukee LGBT history! I’ll cerrainly be purchasing more copies as gifts for some of my Milwaukee friends.

Excellent read. I expected it would be informative, but didn't know his writing would be so entertaining. Great stories of a century of decadence and fun right here in Milwaukee.

Interesting look at the history of Milwaukee's LGBT community, and wonderful pictures.

I loved learning more about my state and my community. History of our community is so hard to find and to find such a book on Wisconsin!!!
