I was checking out the other reviewers of this book on knitting. They are all men, or so they're identified, and all have "reviewed" this book in the past couple days. Why hasn't this book been reviewed by actual knitters? Or women?I also notice that all the reviewers past reviews have been within the past couple weeks, most within the past week.I leave it to others to draw their own conclusions, but in my opinion, there's some gaming of the Amazon review system going on.I "bought" this book for free… I'm a knitter… so I'll take a look and see for myself and report back.
I thought it was a knitting book about socks ONLY, but most of the book is spent on how to learn knitting (in general), like the types of needles, yarns, how to cast stitches, etc. and very little on how to make socks, which is what I was hoping for. I honestly did not learn anything new with this book.
When I first bought this book I thought, “There’s no way I’ll be able to learn how to knit socks simply from reading a book,†but I decided I’d give it a try and see if the great reviews I had read were right. Well, I was definitely pleasantly rewarded! I was thoroughly impressed by how easy the instructions were to follow. You are walked through every single step in a clear and concise way. What really sealed the deal for me were the pictures that went along with the instructions. As a predominantly visual learner, having pictures available to turn to for reference really helped me during those moments I felt I might be taking a wrong turn, or should I say stitch, lol. Seriously though, this was beyond helpful, especially for someone who didn’t have the slightest idea where to start. Another great aspect of this book that I really loved was the fact that the book provides you with resources that can be linked to straight from the e-book, such as the link provided for free additional patterns online. It really is amazing to think that a couple of days ago I purchased this book and now I am finishing my very own pair of Absinthe socks!! I would definitely recommend this book to anybody who would like to learn how to knit socks or wants to pick up a new hobby.
Very pretty cover, but all of the photos are in blurry black and white. So disappointed. When you are reading an instructional book, especially a knitting book, you need to see the photos - the stitches. ESPECIALLY when the instructions refer you to a specific photo. Based on the cover, I never imagined all the photos would be in black and white. Then when I realized how blurry many of the photos are, I knew I wouldn't be able to use this book. I really expected better considering what the photo technology is these days, and also compared to what other instructional books look like. No complaints about about the writing. This is only the second book I have ever returned to Amazon.
Knitting Socks, is a great book for beginner knitters like myself. I have always, been confused about what needles to buy and, which yarn to use but, it is all clearly explained within the book. Not only, is the book helping me learn how to hold the needles it also, provides step by step instructions on how to read knitting patterns; as a new knitter being able to read the pattern is important and, I thought it was extremely valuable. If you get caught on any knitting terms that you don't understand, (like I did) don't worry there is a glossary in the back explaining each word. There are many different sock patterns that have easy instructions and, helpful illustrations which, made it a lot easier to understand what I was doing. The book even provides tips for long lasting socks and, tips for beginners. Although, I am not left handed I found that a bonus was to have a section dedicated to those who are knitting left handed. Overall, I have really enjoyed the book and, will be recommending it to friends.
