I cant stress how great this book is for any educator. I currently work in a Title I elementary school and as soon as I finished the book I sent out an email to my entire staff encouraging them to read it. It's that good!Kristin Souers’s background is in mental health and Pete Hall’s resume includes teaching and administrator. The combination equates to realistic ways to use the information they are sharing, which if we are being honest doesn’t always seem to happen in professional development books. Part of why it feels do-able is because they encourage self-reflection and questioning when you find yourself in situations with a student, which I love. I've got to be honest. I didn't love this book. I thought it was very vague. Generally, her advice is: Show compassion, be flexible, don't get bogged down in the details of the child's trauma, and have clear and consistent expectations in your classroom. She talks about the 6 communications steps to use with your students, but I didn't think they were explained clearly with examples. Think of this book more as a primer, particularly if you are new to working with students.

This book is written for elementary and secondary school teachers and support personnel but it can easily be used by teachers, mental health workers, etc. who work with children of all ages. I am a school social worker and have so many unread books on my shelves but this was recommended to me and it is an awesome resource! Best thing I've read in years. The end of each chapter has reflection questions for teachers prompting them to think about whether or not their classroom (and the teacher) is truly trauma-sensitive. My own building and 2 others in my district are using this as a book study for the year. It's an easy read and well worth buying for all staff.

So much of the time we as educators think that we need to know the "story" to help the child. But what is really most important is providing a safe intellectual environment where there is consistency and relationship building. If you are in the field of helping and working with kids-- read the book. The author validates what you are doing already and challenges you to look at things from a different perspective. I am empowered. I hope you will be too.

Probably the best book I have read about working with students. I am a mental health therapist in an alternative school for students with behavioral and mental health challenges. I recommend this book to everyone.

This book is a must read for anyone working with students facing trauma. This book presents educators with important background information around trauma and its affects on the human brain in an easy to read format. Educators are then presented with specific tools and strategies to empower students and create a trauma-sensitive school environment. I have just purchased this book for a book study with our staff. Thank you, Kristin Souers, for your dedication to this work.

This story is based on a real girl who lived during WWII when the US dropped an atom bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. She was a toddler at the time, but she received leukemia due to it about ten years later. She makes paper cranes in hopes that she will get better.I read this book to my sons and they really enjoyed learning some history and were sad about learning the destruction done to the children and people who survived and died because of the bomb. It really opened their eyes to understanding the pain and destruction left behind due to wars.We made origami paper cranes after finishing this book and the boys had a really nice time learning and playing with their cranes afterwards.

I purchased this book for my granddaughter who is getting married on the 23rd of Aug 2014. She has made 1000 paper cranes as the focal point of her wedding décor because of this book. I had asked her what the significance of the paper cranes were and she told me about the book so I had to go online and read up on and was completely mesmerized about the story and even more so when I learned that it was a true story. I had to purchase the book of course and the day I received it, I read it from cover to cover and had a good cry. I gave the book to my granddaughter for a wedding shower gift after learning that she did not have a copy. ThanksPat Becker

There is so much to learn from the time period, and main character Sadako. My claim for this book is: Sadako Sasaki’s life is both historical and moving, as it takes you through, the descriptive language keeps you interested, the strong emotions make you feeling so much throughout the story, and you’ll see all the heartfelt moments. In the end you will learn about perseverance and hope. This is a story about an eleven year old girl called Sadako, who lives in Hiroshima Japan. Her story takes place in 1955 around the time the atom bomb was dropped in Japan. This bomb brought a lot of radiation to Japan, and brought on the disease called ‘Leukemia’. Sadako’s life changed completely, as she spends the remainder of her life now in hospital. She has to swallow pills and have injections every day. Her life has forever changed. The book ‘Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes’ is a heartfelt story. It says in the text, “ Suddenly everything seemed to whirl around her as she sank into the ground. [...] A few minutes later she was in hospital.” (page 26) In this part of the story Sadako is getting rushed to hospital because she had a signs of Leukemia, this shows how Sadako’s life is scary, this made me feel so bad for her. (My heart melted) This book has so much descriptive language I was always so interested because of it. The author writes, “They floated out to sea like a swarm of fireflies against the dark water.” (page 30) This piece of evidence shows how descriptive and interesting this \\book can be.This story has a lot of parts with strong emotions that will fill you with emotions throughout the entire story. The text says, “Sadako realized she had Leukemia, but what she also new was that some patients recovered from the disease. She never stopped hoping she would get well soon.” (page 48) At this part of the story Sadako has realized that there’s a possibility she could recover from Leukemia. This shows how powerful these strong emotions can be.In conclusion you and the readers will learn about how Sadako inspires hope and peace to this day. I rate this book five out of five stars and two thumbs up. You’ll never be able to stop turning the pages.

Fabulous true story. Can open up discussions for students with a classmate with critical health issues. As a retired teacher who taught this book, I would recommend ongoing discussion as it is being read. Bought it for a granddaughter and included a pack of origami paper, as directions for folding the crane are in the back.

This story is inspirational.A few friends and I have taken on folding one million cranes and delivering them to the Pease Memorial Ceremony so as part of that effort I thought I should order the book telling the story of Sadako and her cranes. I ordered the wrong book by mistake. Yes it was about the same person and events but that book was such a discouragement that I doubt we would have taken on the project if this had been the book read by the others in our group.I promptly ordered the this book. The original by Eleanor Coerr entitled Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. What a difference! Yes it is the same story but this time presented in such an inspirational, hopeful way as opposed to the morose, judgmental tone of the other.

My 5 year old fell in love with this book. I was debating whether to read something so "harsh" to him (about the bombings in Japan), but in the end, I'm glad I did. The book is so well written he was just fine without having tons of pictures. He handled the material well. It was sad to read it to him, but I'm so glad I did. He learned about some of the truths of our harsh world and I think he will be a better, more well-rounded person for it. He really connected with the characters and could empathize with their struggles. I remember reading this book as a kid and loving it. I'm so surprised how well my kindergartener took this book. I'm not recommending it for most kindergarteners, my son is mature and handles things like this well. But in general, this book will encourage empathy, diversity, and kindness in any child who is exposed to it.

One of my all time favorite books. I read this as a child and bought this copy for my niece so that she, too, could read it and never be the same again, too. This is one of those books that changes a person and that it's for a young reader is more impressive.It tells the true story of a girl that develops leukemia at a young age and starts folding paper cranes because if she can fold a thousand her wish will be granted.This book is a book of hope and desperation and a reminder of the horrors of war as her cancer was a result, albeit many years later, of the US bombing of Hiroshima when she was just two.

Since the Caterpillar was published in 1969, Eric Carle has illustrated more than sixty books, many best sellers, most of which he also wrote.Born in Syracuse, New York, in 1929, Eric Carle moved with his parents to Germany when he was six years old; he was educated there, and graduated from the prestigious art school, the Akademie der bildenden Kunste, in Stuttgart. Book was in brand new condition but it was not what I expected. The numbers are not in order with the same number of fruit/item. The book would be better for an older child. I thought the book would be matched together to get the concept of counting but it is not matched page for page the child/adult would have to match the number and the item. Very nice book just better for an older preschool/K child.

Eric Carle books are the best! The board book is quality, good size for baby hands and printed very clear. We have a variety of his books and our baby loves them!

Amazing! When I first saw the book, I didn't get it, but I looked it up on YouTube and immediately bought it for my 1 year old daughter. I'm a high school math teacher and am so excited that this book can help my daughter learn problem solving skills while she's learning her numbers. The idea is this: each top page has a number and each bottom page has an amount of objects. The goal is to match up the correct number with the correct amount of objects!

This is great for learning...but if you are buying for an infant, the inner flaps are quite sharp

It is a little too advanced for my 2 year old. But she loves Eric Carle books so I know that she will grow into it.

If I like something, I am usually pretty generous with my ratings. I enjoyed this book so much I would have to put it a star above other books I rated as five stars. The art and story are incredible. Usually, I am not a big fan of art that is too cartoonish. Example: anime that are drawn seriously until something shocking happens, and then the faces turn into cartoon faces, with big round eyes, no nose, and a huge open mouth. I prefer the style of Jorge Molina from Marvel's A-Force, where the characters have realistic but humorous expressions. The art in this book borders on cartoon, but is oh so creative. The stylized humans and creatures are great. And the story is so captivating, I couldn't put it down. I am already onto the second volume. Highly recommended!

"RUMBLE!" breaks the mold of what good visceral, epic tale telling can be. John Arcudi's dialog is crisp and has a sharp wit, somewhat self deprecating too. The back story of the characters is arresting. The best part is even the bit players have parts, including the minor demons that are introduced and... well, I'm not giving that away. This is a big world story that comfortably fits on the page and delivers all the bells and whistles without being the actual bloated epic it could be. Best of all, Bobby, the bartender could have been a joke. He's skinny, unsure of himself, but he has a lot of character and this appears to be his reluctant chance to be someone with more going on. His buddy Del is a lot of fun, full of beans, but not so bright. Rathraq, the warrior god is kind of inspired by old world tales of demigods, eternal but also vulnerable. He's mean and powerful but a defender of humanity, and I like that he's NOT Conan or Thor, but kind of a nod to both. Anyway, he wants his body back. Old demons with serious attitudes and their own ancient grudges have it.That's all I'm saying.This was in my top three comics this year and I'm pleased the collection has arrived. There's more to come as the series continues to unfold. Even my wife liked it.

I'm a fan of John Arcudi's writing on B.P.R.D. and James Harren's artwork, so I thought I'd check out this series. I'm a little biased in favor of this book since I got to meet Harren at Emerald City Comic Con '15 and he was gracious enough to take some time and give me a really helpful critique of my comic book art portfolio. It was fun to see his original art for BPRD - full of ink splatters, white out and glued in fixes. While many artists (including myself) have switched to drawing digitally, Harren has committed to doing things the old fashioned way and as a result his work has a lot of kinetic energy missing from a lot of books. Arcudi's weird run-dow, demon infested story allows Harren to really cut loose with a more exaggerated style than BPRD, while the (human) characters themselves remain a bit more down to earth.I use the Wizard of Oz as a comparison in my heading, but I'm talking about L. Frank Baum's book, which is much stranger than the movie, where we learn the Woodsman became made of tin after accidentally hacking himself to pieces with a cursed ax. There are a few really great moments in Rumble, especially a couple pages of a dumpster diving cat and a three-legged dog that actually made me laugh out loud. There is a lot of promise for more bizarre stories to come, but I do think as an introduction it fell a little short of my high hopes. I usually find expositional narrative boxes in comics to be lazy and tedious, but I think a little bit more context would have been helpful for this fast paced story. The cover character, a Conan-type, warrior-possessed scarecrow, doesn't seem so out of place when set amongst a rundown city full of colorful characters and demonic entities. One of the things that works about Hellboy is how bizarre he looks standing next to regular people in regular places. Here, everything looks weird and so some of the impact of the intrusive fantasy/demonic elements is lost. I'm also not sure who I'm supposed to be rooting for yet.That being said, this series is packed with enough action and humor to keep me interested. Arcudi's strength in BPRD was rounding out one-dimensional characters in the established Hellboy universe, so I'm hopeful the second arc will help flesh out the world and characters a bit. Also, James Harren draws some of best monsters in the business.

This was a very enjoyable graphic novel. I honestly wasn't quite sure what to expect when I got this tp. First the art is a bit cartoony but very enjoyable. The characters are also really cool I especially liked the the designs for the monsters there is indeed a hydra and a scarecrow war god also of note is a shaman like character, an evil queen and a badass fire demon. At first I wasn't sure about the story just because it doesn't really explain what's going on right away so it was a bit harder to follow on my first read through but I have since read through several times and I am eager for volume 2

Visceral and without just quoting the cover, TRULY kinetic in the purest artistic sense of the word. Finished in one sitting and ordered the next two straight away. Style is cartoonish yet grotesque. Clear but stylized. Story is fantasy meets everyday Joes.

Great monster massacre stuff, funny and fast paced. Graphic violence only if you are scared off by the image of something like Ren and Stimpy getting disemboweled, because that's about the style we are talking about here. Colorful and easy to get into.

This work fully realizes the comic book format - buy it if you're a fan of graphic story telling. Let's all hope there's a volume four someday.

There is a reason that this almost has a perfect five star rating on Amazon. It's THAT good.I am soooooooooo not the target demographic for this book. I'm close to forty years old and rarely watch youtube. Before this book I had no real clue who Shane Dawson was. I maybe had seen a few of his videos. My daughter begged me for the book and I'm excited whenever she wants to read. I came and looked at reviews before purchasing it and they are overwhelmingly positive with the exception is some parents. I decided to order and it and read it before she did.I freaking loved it. It literally had me laughing out loud (my strange addiction- which isn't a funny story per se but the visual picture I got of him in a bathroom sink screaming about the devil... well it threatens to send me into hysterics right now)and also crying. (Denny's and Death). I felt like I really learned a lot about him and I LIKED him. No his language isn't clean, yeah sometimes he's a little gross (dude has some intestinal ISSUES) , but he just comes across as genuine. If I tell my little girl that life isn't always gonna be so bad, I probably get my eye roll. Shane tells his funny/tragic stories and she has hope.My daughter is almost 11. As her mother I'm ok with her reading this. There was only one part I thought might be a little inappropriate but on the whole FOR MY CHILD I think is a great book. Of course you might have a different relationship with your child. My daughter is wise beyond her years. We discuss things like gay rights, politics and religion. She never doesn't ask a question she is wondering about. "Mom what's a prostitute? Mom what's masterbate mean? Mom why are people racist? Etc...I'm so glad I ordered this book. Shane Dawson has a new fan in me!This book was a personal purchase and I'm leaving a review so as to help future potential buyers.

I have been following Shane Dawson on YouTube since he started. I absolutely love his humor. Some of the essays in this book are over the top hilarious and some of them are downright wholesome. I love it. I will probably buy his other book soon considering I loved this one so much. Learning about his experiences with everything has made me realize, he is just in fact another human being in this world with emotional baggage. That's probably why I relate to him so much. I just wanted to share that I do recommend this book for people who get his sense of humor and if you are on the fence of buying it, there is probably a great reason why you haven't yet. For me, it has been an emotional roller coaster that I actually enjoy. And to be honest, I haven't been interested in reading a book, front to back, in YEARS. Probably since high school. So the fact that I read this book in nearly one night, forcing myself to put it down and get some sleep, makes me think that I spend my time and money well. Believe me when I say this but it's definitely not for everyone.

If you're a fan of Shane Dawson, this book is a must have!The copy I received had his signature, but that's more on the seller.It made Shane more relatable and feel more human (as compared to his online self,) as well as explained why he does certain things (like spit out sugar-y food instead of swallowing it or why he doesn't like substituted sugar.)The set up for conversations may not be for all people (it's set up in a [character]: [words] way instead of "[words]", said [character]) and certain words may not be spelled like you'd expect ("ya" as opposed for "yeah" was weird for me.)It's filled with good quotes and I hope the next book he puts out is just as good!

I purchased this book for my daughter who has followed Shane Dawson for several years now. We both have been a avid follower of Shane. We decided to read the book together. We laughed to tears and then we cried and laughed again. I must say that this is one of the most entertaining books that I have read in a long time. My daughter never liked reading but she couldn't put this book down. She hopes that he will write another one and can't wait to have him read it to her as she plans to purchase that down load as well. I think anyone with a sense of humor would love this book young or old. I am so glad that I purchased this book for her. It gives an inside story to Shane and his personal experiences though some are sad most are extremely funny. I would highly recommend this book as a gift or just for yourself regardless of your age. We all have done similar things in our life but he has put it together in an amazingly enjoyable book that you once you start reading you simply can't put down. It was like four am when we finished it. A must have for your book shelf.

A number of people here have referred to this as the best resource of its kind and used other such glowing remarks. As a professor of New Testament and a specialist in Second Temple Period Judaism, I simply have to say, "no." This is an attractive and affordable edition of a "classic" work, but the work was completed a decade before World War I. Have we learned nothing about Second Temple Period Judaism in the century (plus) since Schurer wrote this? The Dead Sea Scrolls, that library of Jewish texts apparently used and hidden by the Qumran community (and quite likely representing a branch of the Essenes) would only be discovered forty-some years after Schurer died. Archaeology of the region has made significant advances in the century since Schurer. The study of ancient Judaism itself has been revolutionized by thinking of it no longer as the legalistic foil to Christianity, but as a religion of grace and response (a re-thinking of Judaism and the old stereotype motivated not least by the fact of the Holocaust).I'm not advising against buying this set; I am strongly advising against approaching it as if, in the 21st century, it is still the go-to resource for the study of "the Jewish People in the Time of Jesus." Far better: An Introduction to Second Temple Judaism by Lester Grabbe; Early Judaism: A Comprehensive Overview, edited by John Collins and Daniel Harlow; Greeks, Romans, Jews by James Newsome. Perhaps best (though costlier): The Cambridge History of Judaism (volumes 2 and 3 will cover this period well).

Unhelpful that the formatting didn't really translate all that well to Kindle (and who lists all the references before the text?) and that Greek and other languages aren't at least sounded out in English. I don't read those languages. I don't mind learning new stuff, but I can't even sound it out because I can't read the fonts. Still, despite all those frustrations, I'm really into the texts when I can finally find it after skimming through references. It gives an informative backdrop that helps delve into the psychology and political realities in the NT period.Edit: I can only stomach going through half of it, sorry. I am giving up. It's very informative, but the lack of readability is just giving me a headache.

A very learned compilation from old writings/authors with in depth discussion on the validity of each author, of copies available from their works, etc. Brilliant. But it takes a lot of patience as it is extremely detailed. Unfortunately its discussions of the original meaning are many times referred in Hebrew, aramean and the likes, so if you know nothing about them you get a bit lost. However, worth the effort is the subject is of ones like.

I really like the set of books. They fill in the blanks. More so because they state reference verses in the Bible also. The references are many so you can go with the author and why he chose it and it gets your mind moving in directions you may not thought of. You can think on your own and make your notes in your Bible along with the authors. Eye opening. The back biting, back stabbing, assassins, wars, this is a warm up, excluding the Jews, these are the outsiders fighting over Syria and of course Jerusalem in the middle. Please get these books, you'll be glad you did.

This was not easy to follow and indeed seemed to speculate more than some readers would enjoy.

Every Bible scholar should read this book. It is a scanned document, not a printed document; meaning there are a few scan errors and you must pause to decide what "wafer" means ("water".) Having said that, it is fundamental study work. It is also very difficult to read as the author put in the actual Greek, Hebrew or Latin words which most of us do not understand. Still, the story is more than understandable and is a mind boggling read; this is where most of our understanding of the scriptures originate. You will never learn as much about the Jews anywhere as in this book. Powerful. And, cheap on Kindle.

Had expected, based on the book title, that there would be a more detailed description of the social and cultural features of the Jewish culture. That wasn't the case. Religious historians may find the content of this book more to their satisfaction. I read about halfway into the book and then gave up on it. Definitely a disappointment.

Too much of the text is written in Greek. Iris get some new info but missed much since I couldn't read the Greek.
